Your Albums Of The Year - 2017
« on: December 30, 2017, 10:52:18 AM »
Go on then, give me your lists. I'll give everyone's album of the year a listen, mainly because I've spent much of 2017 in far heavier waters than most TNMSers live in and fancy something a bit lighter to clean the palate.

My ten:

1. Wo Fat - Live JuJu: Freak Valley & Beyond (Ripple Music)

2. Mastiff - BORK (APF Records)
3. BongCauldron - Binge (APF Records)
4. Battalions - Moonburn (Hull Noize Collective)
5. Widows - Oh Deer God (UMC Recordings)
6. Tuskar - Arianrhod (Riff Rock Records)
7. Elder - Reflections On A Floating World (Stickman)
8. Ex People - Bird (New Heavy Sounds)
9. Ba'al - In Gallows By Mass (APF Records)
10. Morass of Molasses - These Paths We Tread (Hevisike)

Quite surprised to fins I bought 10 new releases this year - remember kiddies, the past was better - but it appears I did. More than 10, so even some editing was needed. ARH's list reminds me, I need to Bong a Cauldron...

1. Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere

2. White Willow - Future Hopes
3. Von Hertzen Brothers - War is Over
4. Motorpsycho - The Tower
5. Lunatic Soul - Fractured
6. Elder - Reflections of a Floating World
7. All Them Witches - Sleeping Through the War
8. Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day
9. Pallbearer - Heartless
10. Hawkwind - Into the Woods
Legend in my own Mind

1. Dool - Here Now, There Then. Fantastic dark rock from Holland.
2. Motorpsycho - the Tower. Magnificent album from the Norwegians.
3. Mastodon -Emperor of Sand. A big step up from the previous 2 albums.
4. Wolves in the Throne Room - Thrice Woven. They're Back!
5. Les Discrets - Predateurs. They're French…
6. Death Alley - Live at Roadburn. The only band I make an exception for when it comes to year lists and live albums. A true rawk fest here.
7. Simo - Rise & Shine. Psychofunkadelicrocking…when did the 70's end?
8. Pallbearer - Heartless. Metaaallll. Doomy & brilliant.
9. Prong - Zero Days. Dunno, just really digging the ELO vibe in "Divide and Conquer".
10. QOTSA - Villains. This needs the honourable mention despite Homme's antics these days…

Must mention: Mastodon's Cold Dark Place EP. Not an album but oh so sweet.

Again, 4 band camp purchases included here. Not bad at all.

VON HERTZEN BROTHERS - WAR IS OVER. It was the only one I bought though.

U2 - Songs Of Experience

If you’re going to buy only one album in the year it might as well be by the biggest band in the world. :)

Had to check my Amazon orders, only 10 new releases in there...

The Magpie Salute. Really rather good
Anathema - The Optimist. They think that they're better than they are and this took a while to click, but now its there i really like it.
Foo Fighters - Concrete & Gold. Standard Foos fare, but not bad for that....
Walter Trout - We're All in This Together. Joyous colaborations. Fine playing
Lunatic Soul - Fractured. Dark and could do with some editting, but pretty good.
David Gilmour - Live at Pompeii. All very familiar and a nice reminder of the gigs at the Albert Hall
The Pineapple Thief - Where We Stood. Disappointing "triumphant" gig....best left to studio output
Lonely Robot - Please Come Home. Up its own arse
Snakecharmer - Second Skin. None of the fun of the debut
Neil Finn - Out of Silence. Bland, which being a big fan of Mr Finn was the biggest disappointment of the year...

I've got a stack of new releases to work my way through post Christmas, Looking forward to the U2, Kepler Ten, BCC and enjoyed the first couple of plays of Percy Plant.....

Must check out the Magpie Salute ...totally agree with you on the Neil Finn effort...i was quite stunned tbh... think the experimental, working/living in that fish bowl organic recording process didnt help tbh....sometimes....most times.....great musical ideas need time and space to settle... they have to be worked on, demoed, rehearsed, reworked, modified, nurtured, crafted and polished before becoming a finished product worth putting out there

Neil Finn record takes some listening to,  but I absolutely love it.  Just gorgeous.  Gagging for a UK tour..

May have to re-visit....too much other stuff to listen to at the moment though, so I'll put it on the "try again later" pile...

Hmmm....maybe I'll dig it out and give it another go...but I'm not expecting to change my opinion.
Would love to see him play live again though...the London date on the last tour was incredibly good.

It not for everyone, I guess.  You're right though - the show I saw on the last tour was just superb - and he comes across as a proper good bloke too.

Indeed, one of my favourite artits to see live. Always a good show.

A couple of times I've seen him solo or with CH and he's gone over curfew and calmed down over-enthisiastic secuirty. Would be good company at the pub for a few hours...

He played over curfew in 2014 at Gateshead.

I remember waiting to meet him at stage door after one of his shows on his first solo tour - he came out at exactly the same time as 3 obnoxious pissed up twats were walking by with pizza...they started taking the piss...quite remarkably, within a few minutes he got them 'on side' and they were laughing and sharing pizza and everyone got their stuff signed - including their Pizza box.  Top man.
