Radio question
« on: October 26, 2015, 20:31:08 PM »
For in car systems, how does the RDS system compare to DAB? The reason I ask is I looked at a 14 plate Kia Sportage today, lovely car, but it had a RDS radio system, which I'm guessing is not as good as DAB.

Totally dependent on where you drive. If there is solid reception then DAB is best but if the radio signal is weak then DAB will stutter as it is digital so it's an all or nothing system. RDS will cope better with weak signal as it's analog but you will get the traditional shortcomings of hiss and increasing noise and cross channel interference.

Thanks Ron. If put on the spot, which one would you choose though?

I've got DAB (and aerial) in my car but never use it.  It is rubbish.  Or at least it was 2 years ago when I had it installed.  Ok if you park somewhere where there is a good signal and don't move.  Not good at all when travelling on motorways.

That's just my experience.

I'll stick to good old FM until they get rid of it ta.

Sounds like a poor install, Reg....no problems for me, works well all over the country....

'er indoors' car has a DAB radio built in, and it has been superb - good signal everywhere we go in it.

Our last car had DAB. Only ever lost signal in very remote places.
Meant I never had to put CDs in the car. 6 Music and 4 extra was sufficient.

Mmm...maybe it was a duff install.
