I may wander into my local John Lewis and give it a demo. :)

Can somepne explain this to me?

The blub says.......

Your favourite songs, upgraded

In addition to playing studio-quality High-Resolution Audio, the NWZ-A Series Walkman® also improves the sound of all your existing music. DSEE HX™ restores lost detail to MP3s and other compressed music files, giving you back the full experience of the original recording, whether you listen to Dvorak or electronic music.

Is that the audio equivalent of upscaling?  ie decompression ;D Also the axis is volume/frequency so how is that a proxy for better quality?

I am confused

Do these players have gapless playback? Is it still the case that Apple are the only products that offer GP?

The Plenue P1 (and I suspect the cheaper recently announced Plenue M) not only has gapless playback but will actively skip silent gaps at the beginning and end of songs if you tell it to.

Hmmm.....that A&K player can also be used as a usb dac for MAC/PC. I assume the headphone out can be soft configured as line out too but that makes it a nice option and gives Sony come competition.

The Sony one does for FLAC files but not MP3

Interestingly my iPod doesn't do gapless natively, but it will do with the (open source) Rockbox firmware.

I find that sometimes they're hapless, sometimes not, I don't know what the criteria is.

Another Hi-end (so lotsa $$$$) DAP Review

http://www.head-fi.org/products/acoustic-research-ar-m2-dap/reviews/12888

I thought Acoustic Research died years ago but apparently not.

I remember the as a company that made lousdpeakers in the late seventies.....AR18's if I remember rightly were in a recommended budget system along with a Rega Planar 3 turntable and NAD 3020 amplifier  :)

Bought an Astell & Kern AKjr. First toe dip in portable highdef. Looking forward to receiving it and getting some lossless 24bit flacs onto it and seeing how it performs. :)
