Do you not think a very dangerous precedent is (at least potentially) set by this judgement?  Do you not think it demonstrates the threshold of what constitutes a hate crime is illiberally low?  :-\

I certainly wouldn't like comedy to be used as a get out of jail free card.  Comedians seem to be suggesting that they should be exempted from hate crime, but that doesn't wash with me.  "Well it was only a joke" is not a valid defence.  What's to stop people who's intention is to spread racism etc from pretending to be comedians to make sure they wouldn't get convicted?

Having said that I don't know much about the case in question so not sure whether he crossed the line and if so by how much

If I may say (which, yes I can ;) ) you are both running into the weeds here, it seems to me.

Have you seen the video?  Whatever the comic merit or demerits of it, the creator's intent is made explicitly clear; if we're in the territory of satirising hate crimes itself being a hate crime, then we're in very bizarre and dangerous territory indeed.  I don't think it behoves us to shrug our shoulders as it this could be the thin end of a very insidious wedge.

I very much hope this conviction is overturned.

It's the bloody same with most things these days mate. I remember when I was a kid and the chocolate Easter eggs were that thick, you needed a hammer to break them. Now you can see daylight through them!

Discovering Maxim Vengerov is playing at Leeds Town Hall, but it clashes with FM at Manchester, for which I bought a tickets ages ago.

If only my musical taste wasn’t so impeccable and eclectic.  ::)

The nation that gave railways to the world finds it impossible to run them.

For which a large portion of the blame lays at the feet of the Tories and past Right wing Labour Governments. Something as important to the running of the UK economy shouldn't be in the hands of foreign based multinational companies and definitely not in the hands of Foreign Governments!

Re-nationalise, I say. Zero improvement but no debate over responsibility.

I recall only too vividly, sadly, that they were never run particularly well when they were wholly nationalised. And they had a substantially lower demand placed on them a few decades ago.

Some pub chains have had to remove the flag of Saudi Arabia from their World Cup displays.

FFS.  ::)
