Brawl In Cell Block 99

From the director of Bone Tomahawk, S. Craig Zahler.

Certainly has the same feel as BT, with its considered, slow-burning pace, glorious photography and delicious, whip-smart dialogue.

Vince Vaughn plays against type brilliantly as a skin-headed drug-runner who ends up in the clink.

And, like BT, while there aren’t lashings of violence, when it happens it’s all the more effective, and is graphic to an almost cartoonish level, as limbs get snapped and heads get brutally pulverised.

So, highly recommended - if you’re not too squeamish...

Standing in the shadows, hiding from the light
Reach out in the darkness, and hold on for your life
All the fear of the future, all the emptiness inside
When the moment of truth arrives, hey, you can run but you can't hide

Madonna - Rebel Heart show on BBC Four.

Terrible.

She should’ve retired as soon as the 90s finished.

Atrocious mimed/auto-tuned vocals, shite “re-worked” versions of her best songs and zillionaire social justice warrior posturing.

Undoubtedly a spectacle, otherwise banal.

Saw that at Christmas when they broadcast it - agreed.  A shocking nosedive from earlier tours.

Watched about 20 minutes of the documentary beforehand before storming out of the living room - bunch of fecking semi literate Z list ‘personalities’ spouting off a load of shite.  If you’re going to commission something like this, then do it properly or not at all.

She's a great guitar player though.....who'd have thought it?   ;)

I'm 3 episodes into Final Space on Netflix.

One more episode to go. This Netflix original is great fun, bizarre in parts, and quite original. It is a grower with some really engaging characters and although the last couple of episodes have got a bit strange to say the least (in strangeness, it doesn't begin to challenge Rick and Morty, but it does get quite trippy!), I'll be sad to see the end of it and will hope that the characters return - although it will be a different dynamic if there is a second series.

I keep noting that there is quite an array of well known talent appearing here and there. David Tennant is a regular as "Lord Commander", and also I spotted Ron Perlman as Gary's father. I saw some others, but they slip my mind at the moment.

mother!

I've never rated Darren Aronofsky and this hasn't changed my mind.  Strange, chaotic but unengaging, with a wilfully shocking climactic scene that seems to be there merely to gain the film notoriety rather than serve a genuine narrative purpose.

Aronofsky reminds me of Nicolas Winding Refn, another vastly over-rated hack who's all shock and no awe.
