Best compact digital camera?
« on: March 11, 2013, 14:58:02 PM »
My trusty Panasonic TZ3 has been lost so I am in the market for a new digital camera.

Anyone been keeping up with these? The Panasonic TZ40 looks pretty good but that was just my default choice.

Depends what specs you want most Ron - Good Zoom / High MP Rating / Low Light Capabilities / Wi Fi / HD Movie / Waterproof and of course price range
This Sony one has some good specs :-

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsc-w-series/dsc-wx200

And this one is a bit more rugged :-

As ever if you were interested in a Sony model and I can get hold of it then I can always look at mates rates for you ;) but really it's what you feel comfortable with once you have chosen the specs you most want.

I'm looking for a new compact, as well. In my case the most important consideration is to have an optical viewfinder, since a lot of digital cameras these days don't have one. Additionally I'd want it to take SD cards so I think that rules Sony out.

My 13 yr old Olympus still works like a champ in decent light, but it's a bit crap in low light, and a bit bulky relatively speaking. No zoom, either. I can get enough photos onto its 128MB smart card for most days (I can remember when 36 exposures seemed like enough :))

Most of the Sony ones now take SD cards Slim - if you look in the tech spec tabs on the website it lists all the different formats - example for the first one I mentioned is :-

Recording Media
Memory Stick™ Duo / Memory Stick PRO Duo™ / Memory Stick PRO Duo™ (high speed) / Memory Stick PRO HG Duo™ / Memory Stick XC-HG Duo™ / Memory Stick Micro* / Memory Stick Micro (mark 2)*

Recording Media II
SD Memory Card / SDHC Memory Card / SDXC Memory Card / microSD Memory Card* / microSDHC Memory Card* / microSDXC Memory Card*

The optical viewfinder could be more of a challenge for the ultra compact cameras on the market today though.

send me a PM if there was a particular model you fancied from their line-up and I'll let you know the mates rates price  ;) - but again, shop around as I'm sure you will, to find a make/model you are comfortable with.

Ah, that's good news. Glad to see that Sony have had their VHS moment for memory cards as well :)

I really like Sony stuff generally. I don't need an ultra-compact, but I do need an optical viewfinder.

As I said on the other camera threads, I love my Cannon G11.
they are now selling the G12 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-Sensitivity-Vari-angle-Purecolor/dp/B0042RUAPC/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1363192432&sr=1-1
and it has an optical viewfinder.

Oh I'd love one of those. Lovely camera and I like the retro looks. Costs a bit more than I'd want to fork out for a compact though, given that I have two digital SLRs. I really like these as well:

Delightful retro looks.

However I've just found my trust Canon Powershot hiding behind a stack of CDs in a cupboard, so fortunately it's become academic.

I don't suppose that Ron's Panasonic was there as well was it ?  ::)

If anyone wants access to my "Which?" account to check out their recommendations let me know...

Hmmm. The Sony Cybershot DSC-HX30V looks superficially similar to the Panasonic TZ40 features wise. 18.2 megapixel CCD, 20x optical zoom, shoots FullHD video with stereo sound etc. Price looks cheaper though. I shall dig further....

Further spec comparison would indicate that the Panasonic has the edge features and design wise. A definitive head to head review would be nice.

The Sony HX50 is about to  supercede the HX30 - With 30x Optical Zoom and 20.4MP - also reduced thickness too - not sure of a complete comparison check to the Pana model but just for your info.
