Got a bottle of Jura at Christmas. Don't particularly like it. It's OK. Fortunately I'd bought myself a contingency bottle of Talisker.

But I've mostly been partaking of the Vodka Martini in recent months, so the Scotch imbibing is taking a back seat. Something's gotta give.

Shock as Taiwanese whisky defeats Scottish rivals to win single malt taste test

Jan 26 2010 By Keith McLeod

A WHISKY from Taiwan beat three different Scotch single malts in a blind taste test held by experts.

Kavalan, which has only been distilled since 2008, emerged as the winner to the astonishment of the judging panel in Edinburgh.

When the winner was announced, one judge, whisky connoisseur Charles MacLean, gasped: "Oh, God. Is this an April fool?"

Kavalan beat three Scotch and one English single malts, scoring 27.5 out of 40 at the taste test.

The Scotch brands that came a cropper were Langs (22/40), King Robert (20/40) and Bruichladdich (4.5/40). The St George's English malt scored 15.5/40.

The judges also included gin expert Geraldine Coates, whisky dealer Zubair Mohamed and screenwriter Paul Laverty.

While it is produced in Taiwan, the Kavalan distillery uses malt from Scotland. And the distillery was built by a firm from Dufftown, Banffshire.

It's expected to be a good dram (is it still a dram if it's English ?) - non chill-filtered is usually a good sign, although I'll wait a few years. At only 3YO I expect it will be a touch raw.

A 70-year-old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been carefully emptied from its cask and bottled. Claire Urquhart holds one of the bottles.

Well, according to a site I just looked at, a 70cl bottle of 16 year old Jura would knock you back £39.95.

So £18 seems quite a bargain.
