"Well it mentioned Rush in the review..."

A Rush related-question, but probably sits more happily in the Other Bands Forum...

Once upon a time (pre-family, when I still had spending money and free time), I know I've been guilty of buying albums on the grounds that a review/interview mentioned Rush as an influence/reference point (however briefly).

As a policy, this has been a bit hit and miss - guess I'd count Dream Theater, Queensryche and Primus among the hits.

As for the misses - there's a few dodgy thrash metal LPs melting in my loft (Seem to recall any Kerrang having a phase where any band that displayed 'technical proficiency' with their instruments would be compared to the boys...)

Anyone else had good/bad experiences along these lines?

The good ones are already mentioned, but a bad one definitely was Watchtower's Control And Resistance which I bought for

Why go looking for imitations/soundalikes when you've got the real thing already? 8)

Personally I don't see it like that. I just think if you hear of a band that has been influenced by another band that you already like, then you might like them as well.

I certainly wouldn't blindly buy everything that claims to have a Rush influence, but I wonder if anyone got into Rush bcause of the early claims that they sounded like Led Zep or Genesis etc.

Well said, Dave, as Neil Peart put it, bands should use influences, just not "influence to the point of imitation".

Lots of thrash metal drummers have been influenced by Neil Peart. I have read an interview with Gene Hoglan (Death, Dark Angel, Strapping Young Lad) recently and he said that he had learnt Neil's every tricks.

And Control and Resistance is ace!  ;)

I like your style, Dave, I can never resist the urge of picking up a cheap CD in case it turns out to be a "bargain"

That sounds like a thinly-vieled warning for Mr Quartly!

That's how I discovered Montrose. Picked up their debut album in a sale for 50p some years ago.
