Spent the day working there Saturday and the night out round the pubs. Liverpool was my home town in the 80s and I used to go out there at least once a week and it was always excellent. But now ... it's miles better  ;D. What a fantastic city. OK, it's full of road works and construction right now (shopping centres and city centre living space going up all over right now) but don't let that put you off.
What I really liked was that the pubs we went to were the same ones I used to go to 20 years ago and they'd not changed a bit! And yet there's now new bars and clubs etc everywhere as well so you get the best of both (drinking) worlds. The guys I was with had never been out in Liverpool before and all were amazed at the cross section of people in each pub we went to. They were also amazed at the pubs themselves (The Swan, Philharmonic (said hello to Craig Charles in there but he was very drunk so I doubt he'll remember us!) and the Central Hotel in particular) as they are (in their words) "proper" pubs - and there's still loads of them in the city in amongst all the trendiness.
Anyway, as you may have guessed I had a great time in the old town so if you ever get a chance to go there, do so.

Only one problem! It's full of Scousers!!! ::)

I jest of course! ;) ;D

Seriously, although I haven't been there for a few years now, I've had some good times in Liverpool. It is good for a great night out and the folk are warm and friendly. But Leeds, York and Manchester are still my faves. ;) :D

Never been. would love to visit though.
The lenses inside of me that paint the world black. The pools of poison, the scarlet mist, that spill over into rage.

I can imagine Craig Charles would be the kind of person who wouldnt give up his local. I met him when I was doing Robot Wars, top bloke! Unlike so many celebrities who are pretty vapid ther's a real and happening bloke there.

I don't mean to sabotage the thread, but I think Craig Charles is tops! I've never met the guy, but I can imagine that he's all you say he is John. Cool bloke!

Anyone watch 'Takeshi's Castle'? Man is that show fabulous!! ;D 8)

My wife is a scouser, but says that she would rather have red hot needles shoved under her nails than ever go back :-/
Ach, if Dougie were here, he'd tell you himself....

she's not alone in that view, trust me.

A great place to visit for a while... pubs/people are pretty impressive but there are still much better places around the UK in my experience.

Spending an hour there was enough and an experience I don't care to repeat in a hurry.

Had a night round there after seeing Yes at the Summer Pops 2 or 3 years ago (3rd row, Squire side - fantastic!), enjoyed it very much.  It's one of those places where my mates and I have always banged on about spending a long lads' weekend, but haven't got round to it yet. ::)  Must do it next year. ;D

It has culture capital does it not? So it can't be all that bad?

In 2008, it's will have... a ridiculous amount of construction work and roadworks at present ( for a tram scheme that's not happening). ::)

It has its plus points though...
