Title: Motorpsycho
Post by: Bisto on May 03, 2017, 12:20:49 PM
Discuss

Ive somehow managed to maintain a completely oblivious ignorance of this band throughout their long and, it seems, very varied and interesting musical career

Do any of you lovely folk have any hints or suggestions as to how I should approach listening to their back catalogue please. Any helpful advice given would be very welcome and much appreciated. Thanks!

Ive tried a dozen times to write more than Discuss in the first post but it wouldn't have it....but the problem now seems to have resolved itself thankfully

They did release a greatest hits of some sort 2 years ago. Might be a good starting point,
generally speaking they have 3 different (some say 4) periods. I like them all but have a soft spot for the early 2000-2005 years due to the compact songs.
If you want the long winding and proggy stuff only, start at Little Lucid Moments, a true tour de force (4 songs 60 mins). After that you can either go forward in time or backwards. Forward makes it proggier / more jamming, backwards usually more rocky, compact but always with a twist.
Most poppy album: Blissard.
Fan favorite: Trust Us (Vortex Surfer is essential listening!)
My favorite: Phanorethyme (I think, no one remembers that title…)
Notable: the live series (Roadworks). Rough and tough recordings not for the faint of heart. Roadworks vol 2 is best to leave until the very end (interspersed with lots of improv and avant grade jazz related stuff).
They even have a country album (the Tussler)…
I know I keep going on, but I have been a fan for ages.
If you get a chance, go see them live, they never ever disappoint and you will meet the nicest people :-)

I've only really dipped my toes into the recent seas of Motorpsycho, but I can heartily recommend:

Heavy Metal Fruit
Still Life with Eggplant
Behind the Sun
Here be Monsters

They've all got Mellotron on - HOORAH! - and Reine Fiske appears on the later ones. Always a good sign :)

Well done! There's 2 new releases on the horizon. The first one in June, music composed and played by MP for a play (all in Norwegian - they did it before) and a new full fledged album (with new drummer) in September.

Cheers for that Thenop!  :) That sounds interesting....well, they don't do boring do they?!  8)
So, who is the new guy? Is he permanent or just a hired drummer for tours?

No they do not do boring. Try to do 'The Death Defying Unicorn' (subtitle: a fanciful and far -out musical fable) recorded with the the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra...wow.. that is, ehm, different!

The new drummer: I don't know him but he is a band member, will record & tour with them, so yeah he seems there to stay.
We live in interesting Motorpsycho times as well. They are doing all sorts of re-issues with (lots of!) added material. For a very fair price. I have the Angels and Demons at Play one, I think it was 25 euros, it's a 6 disc set.
I really love the Blissard one though, considered their most 'pop' record (well alternative rock is more lie it) and the added material really adds to the experience with lovely long and moody pieces.

Cheers Thenop 8)

I ordered the reissued box sets of Angels and Demons, Blissard and Timothy's Monster....I wish I had discovered this amazing band 25 years ago. How the holy, blue feck did they manage to fly completely undetected by my musical radar for so long?

There is some stuff they did that you won't be able to find on Spotify...for instance the singles set 'the Motorpnakotic Fragments', a 7 inch vinyl singles box (cd included) released 2 years ago and only available by pre-order. Or the Konsert for Folk Fest (with a wacky DVD...). And the illustrous vinyl only release "Child of the Future" produced by Steve Albini. Be also sure to look into the Haircuts DVD, with documentaries, clips and a live concerts shot n Amsterdam 2000 (I was there!!). That is actually the Roadworks Vol.3, as you mayhave noticed, only volumes 1,2,4 are available on on Spotify, so there's why :-)>
Don't know whether the In the Fishtank they did (part of a series of collaborations) is still available, also very moody / jazzy and experimental. Lots more to explere here!

This will keep me busy for some time. Not sure if I should thank you or not ;) ....think I will take a step back for a while and let it unfold around me for a few weeks before adding any more to my shelves.

New Motorpsycho album coming up on September 8th.

"The Tower is a statement of intent from a band that is very much alive and kicking: this is the start of a new era in the Psychoverse, and the album stands as proof that there’s bite in the old dog yet!"

Needless to say I've pre-ordered.

First song streaming! Very much straightforward MP, reminds me of their 90's days. I like it.
This will be staple at their live shows for sure: the thrusting bassline, the pumping drums, the songcan be extended indefinitely...oh yeah, I can hear it already :-) If you've ever seen MP live you learn to appreciate the meaning of 'building up tension', check this out from 2002: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0Ywzo5Gc-E
I was there, magical times...

Received the vinyl today. 2 slabs of Gold coloured goodness wrapped in Motorpsychedlic tunes. Wow, I think the term Epic applies here. A lot less proggy, but propelled by the bass and drums this is a monster of an album that grabs me by the throat and does not let go!
Excellent stuff here!
