Title: SPAMMERS
Post by: Dixkot on February 22, 2013, 16:10:48 pm

Folks,

We appear to have a problem at the moment with the amount of spammers getting through and posting on the site.

The techie admin types are working on a solution......  ::)

Meantime, can anyone finding such a post please report it in the usual manner and we will have it dealt with as appropriate.

thanks for all your and other admins hard work on this.
Can we not insist on that everyone's first post has to be approved by an admin?

That's a very good suggestion, I think I can do that if I create a new membergroup (there is a default "newbie" membergroup for people with 0 posts, but you can't modify that), let me have a go.

Ok well I hope I've done that right.

It'll either work, or no-one can do anything! :P

Another music forums I frequent which upgraded recently did this and some simple (for fans) questions  (eg what country do Rush come from? What instrument does Neil Peart play?) for the first 7 posts.
Another had a lyric quiz (put the lyrics to the song title) when you joined. Again simple enough for a fan (or to just google) but slows spammers down enough to put them off.
i realise that if you did this for all posts then it would all be too much for zoony  :P

We do have a few things in place during registration, there is both a captcha and a maths question (eg what is 2+2-1+3), which you would think would catch bots out, ho-hum.

It appears to be working, since there is now a new comment waiting for approval already.

Bear with me, it seems I managed to take away some functionality for regular members while I was at it, so we're back to how we were. Trying to find what I did wrong...

Think CQ has left the back door open!

User has been zapped and I think I've got most of the posts, let me know if you see any more?

Hmmm this is weird because even this morning there were 2 posts waiting to be approved from first posters.

Were they new threads or replying to existing threads?

The way it works is that people with 0 posts "should" be required to have their first posts reviewed, which will then give them a post count of 1, which then gives them the same credentials as regular TNMS members (I might bump this to 3 or 4 posts to see if it helps), there are loads of members with 1 only 1 post. It could be the bots make a standard/generic first post before flooding...

The one I saw was in reply to an old thread.  The user/spammer was marked as a guest.  Can guests post or had Pudders already deleted his account?

Hmmm, I'll have to check in a bit, the settings look right. But I just tried with a test account and I could reply to existing threads (even though the settings say that shouldn't be possible...).

I'd squished him by then so think that's why he appeared as a guest?

Chris, I've not seen any markers showing posts need approval so not sure that was working either - though as we had no problem after you changed the setting s a week ago it suggests that the spammers were stymied?

It's definitely working right now, I had two posts pending approval this morning when I woke up (I wonder if it's only admins that can do that...).

I think a lot of spammers start new threads, so it has certainly slowed them down, just need to figure out how to stop them replying to threads as well, it's looks like all new posts should need approval but that isn't quite working right now.

I'll make a new thread with a test account then post back in here to ask if you can see the red marker.

Ok so I just made a new test thread that is pending approval.

How I see it, there's a red (!) next to General Chat - English which you can click on, or you can go into general chat and the thread appears as it normally would but has a red background.

If any moderator can't see either of those, they must be for admin-only.

Edit - and just this second a new spam thread appeared and is pending approval.

I keep seeing what are obviously abusive and unwanted SPAM messages from an Ianb if that helps the mods track down the problem....

Can't see the (!) or marked threads in GC-E Chris.......

Ok so only admins can see and approve/remove those first posts.

Just tested a new account trying to reply in a thread and that got flagged up too, another plus.

I had a PM last night saying they couldn't create a new thread, which I then sorted, but then the spammers got back, so I might have messed that up again ;D can a regular member try to just create a new thread, please?

Hmmm so what happened? I just logged on and there were posts held back for my approval, both new threads and posts within threads. Maybe some just slip through somehow. We also have a lot of profiles with 1 post, which puts them into the bracket of being able to post freely, could be some of those...
