Title: Pure Reason Revolution
Post by: Simongc on August 09, 2005, 04:17:03 AM
Just discovered this Reading based band who display several very obvious
prog tendencies and yet they have been signed up by Sony BMG who have let
them get away with releasing a 13 minute single! Reading further on their
website I found out that Rush producer Paul Northfield is producing their
debut album which is out next month. That's some serious investment into an
act that seem to fly in the face of all current music conventions.

They recently supported Mew and Secret Machines so maybe some of you have
already caught them live.

Anyway, check 'em out - website is: www.purereasonrevolution.com and the
direct link to a streaming audio/video of their 13 minute single is here:

http://www.sonymusiceurope.com/cgi-bin/multimedia/wmwax?snymusicaomawm.fplive.net&snymusicaoma/video/900020000019213.wmv

Cheers,

You should also check out The Secret Machines, if you haven't already. They're "new prog" to the max and rock like a bastard. And they're signed to a major as well.

Give album opener First Wave Intact a listen:

PRR are excellent. First heard them when Mark Radcliffe played an edited version of The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning on his show. Bought the single and the first EP straight away. The mini album comes out on Monday. Radcliffe played a track off it on his show last week, they also did an acoustic performance on his show on Tuesday this week.
They met at the same college as Pink Floyd, you can here the influence in their music.

Tim Clegg - some of you will know him - has been banging on to me about this lot for a while now. Quite interesting - well better than the stuff he usual goes on about ;D ;)

I've only seen the video for the single (at the top of this thread), but I think I am going to take a chance and go see them down in Brighton; it's a tiny venue (The Freebutt), a real dingy dive, but great to catch bands early; The White Stripes, The Strokes etc, all went through there during their first UK dates, hell even Geist played there once lol

Went to see this lot last night, in the company of Oz, Mr Lack & his mate Reg, at the Barfly in Camden. Top quality stuff, can't remember being this impressed by a British band since I discovered PT many years ago.

They're playing the Bush Hall in Shepherd's Bush on 26th March, highly recommend a few of you try & make it.

I am finally here! Apologies for my lack of posting but I am hoping to turn that around and start posting regularly - even (as Oz said on Thursday) if I have nothing to say!!

Went to see PRR on Thursday also, and thought it was great! Enjoyed the acoustic set a lot but the plugged gig was amazing!

Same as Rascal, I thoroughly recommend these lot. As Pudders will know I have been on about these since I saw them supporting Hope of the States (another great new british band in my humble opinion) back in October 2004.

Saw them last night in Brum supporting Oceansize and they were in blinding form. They've now added Trembling Willows to the setlist and it rocks a phat one!

Also saw them play a short acoustic set in London today which was way better than the BBC acoustic session that they did a few months ago. They've really got the harmonies sorted!

They did send a message on Friday to all their MySpace 'friends'. They had a tyre split open on their van and were unable to find a replacement in time, fortunately it happened at 40mph in roadworks on the M5, much faster and it would have been a lot more serious.

Definitely; I'd agree with that - in fact I was more impressed having seen them live that on first few listens to their studio output. Whilst their mini-album CD Cautionary Tales For The Brave was a bit of a grower for me, the live assault left no room for manoeuvring! It is prog.. in a way I guess, but an intelligent, informed and above-all modern take on the genre. Great vocal harmonies; it's always great to see a band make an effort in that field.

A top gig, very loud; but with excellent dynamics. Should also mention that me and Breesey saw the lovely bass player at the cashpoint before the gig; not that we knew it at the time!

Breesey's ear-plugs seemed like a good idea when I woke up this morning with my ears ringing! Wish I'd bought a T-shirt now (not yellow though!)...

Bez/Dave - if either of you go up to the re-scheduled Hertford gig, can you pick me up a Large t-shirt? Brown, or black? Think they're only a tenner.

I'll second that emotion  ::) This band's appeal is enhanced by the obvious thought and effort that they put into the non musical aspect of their show. The way they come accross on stage is excellant, and there's no messing about with the delivery either... just get up on stage and blow you away.

The Boxer Rebellion, on stage just before PRR, are worth checking out. They're playing the Tunbridge Wells Forum tonight (can't go unfortunately :() and the Borderline on May 5th.

[earplug promo] Yep, I've said it before, these are a must-always-be-in-the-pocket item IMO (especially for noisy bastards like thee and me). They don't detract from the sound, in fact I reckon they improve it, and you're doing yopurself a big favour  :P [/earplug promo]

but which ones?

Used some for the last year or so but found they muffled the sound too much

De ja vu  ;) :D

If you can find the optimum insertion depth :o then the yellow foam ones are fine, I find. Of course you can spend alot on these things, but a step up from the foam are Boots air travel ear plugs. I use these when I play as they cut out the high freqs but seem to leave the overall sound fairly as it should be. In the end it's a choice between a little muffled at a gig or possibly always muffled (or worse) later, you never know. I wish I had always worn them, the main reason I wear them now is (apart from a fairly quiet, but constant, tinitus) is that my ears seem far more sensitive to the higher frequencies and this can be painfull, and I don't wake up next day with that constant loud ringing (anymore than I already have that is)

The choice is yours, just make the right choice ;)

I was quite surprised to see two other people at last night's gig using ear plugs as they were quite young, that's a good sign.

I find them very PT-like (some people with rose-tinted specs disagree ;D) so much so I doubt you'll like them tbh.

They wear their influences on their sleeve, very old-school prog but with a modern sound, over the top vocal harmonies.

I quite like 'em :) but I've not got the full album yet.

The band have put two live videos (filmed at the recent Islington Academy freebie gig that Bez, Dave Lack, Breesey and myself went to) up on their MySpace site.

This should give a few members an idea of what to expect live; am sure there are quite a few of you out there who'd enjoy a live PRR show :)

And there are more than a few nice lingering close-ups of the lovely Chloe ;)

Fraid not Andre, I'm signed up to their Myspace and homepage mailing lists, and although they're doing a few one-off dates at the moment (think they played the V-Festival last weekend, and they've got one or two other festivals lined up this summer), the only date I know of is a home-coming show in Reading at The Fex Club. I think then they were talking about some US shows, so I wouldn't expect another UK jaunt until the Autumn at the earliest.

However they have just released an album, and I can't imagine Sony wont want them out there plugging it :)

The lack of promotion since the album was released has been distinctly underwhelming. The silence has been deafening since the brief promo tour to coincide with it's release. It would be a real shame if it disappeared without a trace, they should really be going for it now.

.....and don't get me started on that poncey website....

Several months after release The Dark Third is still my album of the year by a country mile. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms now though as I haven't seen them live since May, although that was twice within the space of a week!

PRR's Jim hinted on their forum that there might be another UK gig coming up as a warm-up for a US tour - I think I'll try and make that wherever it is!

Also they're apparently recording again at the moment which suggests that things are going well - my big fear is that Sony BMG would drop them complaining that the album hadn't sold well enough.

Cheers,

Simon

I would have thought getting out & playing live would benefit them more at this stage than recording again. Help spread the word & promote the first album before diving in with another.  There's a lot of people quite keen to see them live, either again or for the first time, but.....nothing.

Pure Reason Revolution - The Komedia, Brighton (13/11/06)

All is not well, and not as it seems, in the PRR camp. I had a long chat with their manager after the gig, and had a few words with some of the band, but more of that later; first the gig.

I've only ever been to the downstairs section of the Komedia before, where I saw Tom McRae on an acoustic tour in 2000. Upstairs is larger room, a theatre style studio, which had the tiered seats rolled back to leave a school assembly hall type room; enough for around a couple of hundred people.

The evening itself wasn't a PRR gig, but a charity fundraiser for the Rockinghorse Appeal; a children's charity based in Sussex, that helps makes kids lives in hospital a bit better http://www.rockinghorse.org.uk/ I found out later the one of the charity workers knows Jon Courtney from PRR; hence their involvement.

We arrived in time to see all three bands billed. First up was a giy called Chris Spring and his band, a singer/songwriter from Chelmsford. Their sounds was very 'safe', in a coffee table kind of way, and once it became clear they were using a lot of stuff on tape (backing vocals, keyboards, percussion) I lost interest even faster. They made a pleasant enough sound, and Chris himself had a top voice, but they were bland, and desperately trying to ape Coldplay (why anyone would want to do that, I have no idea). They overstayed their welcome with a half-hour set.

Next up were a local act, the bizarrely monickered Two Spot Gobi http://www.myspace.com/twospotgobi a six-piece jazz/funk/blues/ska tinged collective who were the surprise of the night. Their line-up consisted of the normal drums, bass and guitar, augmented with a cellist and trumpet player, with a lead singer who sang and danced like Jay Kay from Jamiroquai! Sounds hideous doesn't it, but it worked somehow and they obviously have a decent following, bringing with them a decent crowd. They were easily the most popular act of the evening, playing for about an hour and getting an encore too.

Pure Reason Revolution bolted onstage as soon as the previous band had left it, setting their own equipment up much as we saw them do at the Carling Academy Islington. The band looked miserable, and silently set their own equipment up without speaking to one another. Lead singer Jon wore a pair of shorts, which he later apologised for explaining that he's still recovering from a recent operation on one of his legs (see their MySpace blogs for all the gory details!).

The band kicked off around 10.30pm with the familiar Aeropause, which saw the sound engineer balance the levels just fine. The main difference though was that PRR were about twice as loud as any of the other bands! We had a spot about 15 feet back, on the left hand side; in front of Jim and Chloe, but we could've easily ambled forward, leant on the monitors and fiddled with the guitarists' effect pedals, the crowd was that thinly spread.

It quickly became apparent that the band didn't want to be there, or so it appeared that way. No introduction, no hello, no thanks, no crowd interaction whatsoever. Glowering looks and mumbled requests for more vocals in the monitors were the order of the day. Trouble is, whenever a band act like this onstage, if gets greeted with a wave of indifference from the crowd; it's a symbiotic relationship. The Komedia crowd reacted by (in part) emptying into the bar, leaving around 50 or 60 scattered in a semi-circle near the stage.

Despite all this PRR pulled of a typically intense and committed performance airing most of The Dark Third to us; including a nuclear version of Bright Ambassadors Of Morning, where Jim savagely attacked his violin. Highlight for me was a wonderful Apprentice of the Universe, with Chloe's vocals soaring over the guys harmonies. However, it was all over in 45 minutes; at 11.15pm they finished, and marched offstage, leaving guitars stacked in a rough heap on the stage, wailing feedback. Despite 50 people yelling for more, there was to be no more, and the lights came up to a lot of bemused looks from the crowd.

Heading out I stopped at the merch. stand, intending to ask the guy working there about the Blackfield tour next year. The merch. guy turns out to be their manager, John Cooke; an extremely ftiendly and aimiable bloke who I spent the next 15 minutes chatting to about about the band; finding out all manner of information.

First up, PRR have a new drummer (who's name I forget right now), and it was his first gig with the band last night. In fact, due to Jon's recent spell in hospital, it was the first time he'd been in the same room with all of the band at one time!! The previous drummer Andy left at some point a few months ago, following some of the troubles the band have encountered (see below).

Secondly, the Blackfield tour is a definite; as soon as Blackfield confirmed this, they put PRR's name up on their website, including a link to PRR's, and John said their website had an influx of hits and messages; all good. Steven Wilson is apparently a huge fan of the band, and was in line to produce The Dark Third initially, and has said that he definitely wants to do the second one!

Right, now the not so good news. PRR have been without a european label now for a long time. Sony have pulled the plug on the band, and did show around the release of The Dark Third. The band didn't want them to release it without any promotion but they insisted. Funding for a huge 8-week US tour was pulled at the last minute and they have refused to pay for any promotion for the album; which means no money for tours. The last gig the label put money up for was the Islington Academy gig in April. The better news is that they've managed to find a new home with InsideOut, a fairly 'proggy' label, home to Spock's Beard among others, and things are finally beginning to look up, with the Blackfied tour.

By the way, Avalon, I said hello to manager John from you - he knew you (Rob??) and was looking forward to working with you in Europe :)

It was also nice to say hello to Chloe, Jon and the new drummer afterwards, thank them for the show and wish them luck after all their troubles. They seemed genuinely chuffed that people still cared :)

...maybe then this will be a blessing in disguise? It must be incredibly frustrating to be signed to a totally disinterested label but unable to get out of the contract - at least PRR have been able to look at fresh options.

Being pissed off with/by your label is one thing. To show such disinterest, boredom and lack of gratitude at any gig, even such a small pointless one like this, is a really bad thing to do. If I hadn't seen them in Islington earlier in the year I would not be particularly keen to see them again now.
There's no excuse for lethargy when actually playing the music, ever.

No, I don't think so; according to their manager they were dropped on their arse at the 11th hour; a decision made by someone who didn't know who they were, nor cared.

They'll bounce back, I'm sure of it; 2007 will be far kinder to them what with the Blackfield tour and the new home at InsideOut :)
Let's hope you're right Neill  :)

For the record, and according to the PRR Forum posts last night/this morning the KOKO gig wasn't great.

The most important news is that keyboard player/guitarist/bassist/violinist Jim isn't in the band anymore.

At the KOKO gig, they played as a 4-piece, using backing tapes, and apparently it was a bit of shambles (although guitarist Jamie posted a message on MySpace saying he had a great time - go figure!).

They've had a turbulant time of it lately; hopefully it's a blip and they can dust themselves down and carry on being one of the best things to happen to British rock :)

A quick scan of PRR's MySpace page late on Wednesday afternoon revealed that they were playing a small venue called the Bassment Club in Chelmsford that very evening, so a quick confirmation from Maz that she fancied going, and off we went!

Got into the venue around 9.45pm, the venue is quite small and reminded me a bit of The Borderline in London. PRR were just setting up and came on about 10 minutes later. The departure of Jim has meant a little more reliance on backing tapes, but the sound was excellent and the band seemed quite up for it. They played a familiar set including Aeropause, In Aurelia, Voices In Winter, The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning and Trembling Willows. As usual there was minimal dialogue from the band and it was all over 50 minutes later.

However, they did come back for an encore, which I think was a first in the four times I've seen them this year. Jon sheepishly admitted that they didn't have any other rehearsed material, so we were treated to In Aurelia again which we didn't mind in the slightest! The small, but enthusiastic crowd gave them a good reception and one call from Maz that the new drummer was a lot better than the old one drew a chuckle or two from band and audience.  ;D

Thanks to Maz we had a chat with Chloe (steady Neilllll!) after the gig and she said that it had been a difficult few months, with no help from the record company after the release of The Dark Third. She also said that Jim's departure wasn't necessarily final, so watch this space.

So things seem to be looking up for them, one last gig at The Dome in Tufnell Park on the 17th December and then it's full steam ahead for Blackfield!  :D

Title: Re: Pure Reason Revolution
Post by: Dave_Lack on December 04, 2006, 14:21:36 PM
Maz was talikng to a friend of the band's just after the gig, and she said that Andrew's partner had just had a baby, so the assumption would be that perhaps he'd decided to 'get a real job.'

And from what Chloe said, Jim needed a break and is undecided about returning. This information was, however, shouted at us over very loud rock music, so I can't be 100% sure they were the definitive reasons...  :)

The Junction looks a bit more on the main drag to me, especially as I'll be getting the Thameslink & walking up from Kentish Town, other one looks a little (only a little) out of the way.

The Junction website is where I found it.  I think OUTDOOR EVENT on the junction website means not at the junction (they organise a big outdoor event in the summer which probably explains the silly title).  The graduate is a pub over the otherside of town.

I bet the PRR website is still owner / (not) run by sony which explains why the forum is shut & the site not updated.  Also venues often advertise gigs ASAP and before bands announce them.

Fancy coming over then?

Marillion played the Zodiac umpteen times around the time of .com and anorak - in fact there was a 4 night stint there at one point

They don't do it now as the crew don't appreciate having to carry the gear up the stairs

As for PRR I was going to go and see them but not so sure now - seems to be a few issues they need to resolve first

Hope they turn the corner soon

Count me in for the Barfly show.

Bez is right, Andre, let them sort themselves out first. We'd hate for you to come all that way & be disappointed. We'll see what they're like when they play with Blackfield next month (now that would be a better choice for a trip here!).
Cheers Mark,

I guess I will stay home for now. I might have problems fitting in another UK trip in March (I am going to London 16-18 march)

So everyone thought due to it being hosted by Sony (who dropped them months ago) and it being down for about 10 days, but it seems to be back up and running..  :)

Now another weird thing; their MySpace profile has been deleted :-/

UPDATE: And the PRR forum (which vanished and reappeared) is currently unavailable again...

Interestingly, ex-member Jim has a Top friend called "PRR (lite edition)", which links to a cancelled profile... and he used to post a lot on their profile. I wonder if there's some sabotage going on...

OK, an update...

I spoke to PRR's US manager today as he was over here on business. PRR are very much a going concern. What has happened is that someone with a grudge against the band (read between the lines here folks) has hacked and deleted their MySpace page.

The Blackfield support tour is still very much on and their own headline dates in March are still on.

Phew... that's better innit?

Cheers,

Simon

Thanks for the update Simon, that is indeed good news.... ;D

I don't think they've found a new keyboard player - there's some legal shit going on that I think has to be sorted first.

For the record - they've always had some sequenced stuff going on in the background at gigs. I haven't seen the new reduced line-up in action so can't comment on recent performances and the increased reliance on pre-recorded stuff. I'm hoping that this is a temp. stage in their evolution and things will move onwards and upwards over the next few months.

Just for the record, Blackfield also use some pre-recorded material in their shows and so do Porcupine Tree. It's nothing unusual these days - hey, even Rush do!

Cheers,

Simon

Part 1
Day 1...

Ok so the week has been crazy from the start, with the pre-production for the tour at the Fez Club in Reading (our second home), doing visuals, learning the new song and all the other crazy things that happen in our crazy random rock and roll lives.
So after the crazy start it brings us up to yesterday (Friday) an early start with getting ready for the tour, sorting out euros, packing way too many clothes and 4 pairs of shoes (which I have been told is too much, and now I am the butt of every ones jokes)
This may sound a little weird but

Part 2

Days 3+4...

I'm trying hard to keep my eyes open as I write this, I'm just sitting down waiting for Blackfield to sound check.
The last few days have been great, we've had lots of fun on the journey to Germany.
Sooo, I last left you just before sound checking in Belgium, the show was really good and it's amazing to meet new people in new and exciting towns and cities.
After the show we drove into Holland to stay in a hotel to get a good nights kip before the mega drive to Hamburg in the morning.
The Monday was our day off but it was a day spent in the van well most of it anyway so we decided to spend our time playing around with puppets and I've been playing the card game "shithead" with Paul, the tournament tally is 4-2 to me!! I only learnt to play it on Saturday!! Wow we're so rock and roll aren't we?? So we arrive early evening in Hamburg, we get ourselves washed, changed and put major products in our hair and we go out and hit the town

European Tour Diary Part 5

So right about now we're travelling to Germany through the night from Italy, Paul and myself are up trying to keep Louisa (Our tour manager) awake playing shithead, the tally is 7-6 to me!! I am CHAMPION!!! We're doing this while Jon and James (sound man) are sleeping in the van!! It's very cosy!! But I'll be switching with them soon!! Chloe is staying in Milan tonight and flying to Germany in the morning!
The time is 3.14am and I'm so so so so so tired!!!!
The last few days have been long, tiring but really satisfying, 2nights ago on our way to Switzerland we stayed in Germany for the night

Just got back yesterday from seeing PRR twice on the Blackfield tour. Things have tightened up a bit since the Mean Fiddler gig and they're now cooking on gas. I was rather gobsmacked that the 'techno' section of Golden Clothes is now the final number of the set! At the Zoetermeer gig Blackfield drummer Tomer Z got up onstage and did a 'double drummer' thing for this last number!

So I'm all fired up for the BarFly gig in Camden now!

Also - don't think I've mentioned it here before but I set up a Yahoo Group for PRR. I know a lot of people prefer forums to email based lists (although you can use YahooGroups as a web based thing) but it's useful to have an alternative to their currently sleeping forum.

Cheers,

Simon

I worry about the PRR management.  Not just the Sony debacle but there could at least try to get some publicity for these gigs.  For example why werent there any flyers announcing the tour at the Blackfield gig?

Oh well hopefully it will be a storming gig tonight.  I'll let you all know tomorrow.

Don't ask me for a set-list, only bought the album last night (so the band get the cash), or the name of the 2 support acts (who were both quite good). I'd say at a guess there was about 80 people there, The Loft is upstairs in a Pub, low ceiling, good (though low) stage area and bar was really handy (though no proper beer, boo hiss!).
PRR went on at 10.10 (after a lot of technical problems with drum mike set up it seemed), and finished at 11.05 including a well deserved encore. All I can say is the samples on their myspace don't do them justice, thoroughly enjoyed the gig, they seemed really tight, the euro jaunt has done them good I would say, good sound mix too.
Will think about another gig at the weekend maybe.
And great to rock with Patrick again ;D

It was late and I needed my bed (still do).

Anyway no setlist cos I never remember those sort of things.  i think it was about the same as the Blackfield support.

Most importantly it was great to see Paul again.  We must make sure its not so till long next time.

The Loft is a pretty small place and it was a sparce if enthusastic crowd (~80 odd).

We got 2 support bands (at least one is following the whole tour) who were OK but nothing to write home about.

We got about an hour from PRR with great sound and band looking happy and on good form.  They nailed all the harmonies. We were right in the middle at the front so I spent half the gig watching Cloe's fingers running up and down  ;)

The second guitarist (Greg ?) is a complete nutter - bouncing around like my 4 year old daughter.
They each have a little casio keyboard thing to play the sound effects, loops etc.  At one point they were all hunched over their keyboards rather than guitars which was different.

They finished the mainset with a strange appella type thing (just drums and vocal harmonies) before marching off throught the audience as there was no stage door.  Its very strange to have the band walk straight pass you as part of the show (they not very tall!).

Shame they didnt hang around afterwards, I could have done with my CD signing, and the pub threw us out pronto but it was a very good evening.  Shame I cant make the barfly.

Will that do?

Patrick

That'll be Jamie, nice block; quite chatty on MySpace too!

Great review Patrick, thanks :)

Sunday - there's a half-decent (looking) rock pub - it does live bands too - just over the canal bridge on the RHS if you're walking towards the railway bridge. Big windows so you can see inside fromt the street. Guess it'd be about a 3 or 4 minute walk from The Barfly. Can't remember the name though...

I'll bell someone when I'm parked up in Camden, and find out where you are - eta will be about 7ish I think (traffic depending).

No, it was a couple of years ago when I was last in there so may have gone by now. It was on the Chalk Farm Rd, I can't believe the Barfly is the only pub on that stretch!

Its not far from the centre of Camden with all its lovely pubs.  Bisto & I walked to the Roundhouse in about 10 minutes last november. So you could pick anything there!

I quite enjoyed the 3 or 4 songs we caught of Fell City Girl; they had a good sound although the singer was quite operatic.

So, PRR's first headlining UK for ages. The Barfly was packed last night, and we just about squeezed in at the back; a welcome change from other recent PRR shows.

Myself, Dave Lack, Maz, Bruce, Bez and Mark all eventually found space about 6 rows back dead centre. The sound was so-so; bloody loud (my ears are still ringing now), and the vocals were the familiar problem. Jon was a bit too loud all night, Chloe up and down all night, and Jamie was barely audiable (his mic packing up part-way in too).

Besides all that they delivered a powerful and tight show; the recent Blackfield tour has honed their live performance clearly. The newie (freebie download single) Victorious Cupid is clearly a band favourite, and they attack it with glee.

Regular appearance from the likes of Bright Ambassadors of Morning, Trembling Willows, Voices In Winter and my favourite Apprentice of the Universe, made for a familar set.

However just before the dipped off before the encore, they performed something quite different. All three principles without instruments harmonising over some dischordant breakbeat backing (with the drummer pounding away over it), which wouldn't have been out of place on Kid A.

Definitely different!

All in all a good one, not a great one (that's still the Islington show), but I've seen them a lot worse. A good start to the year, lets hope that they can keep it up.

Good to meet Simon of Carbon Nation fame, did you get that interview mate?

The sound for PRR was a bit up and down all night. Strange as Fell City Girl the main support sounded OK. It'd be nice to see PRR without at least one of them signalling frantically to the mixing desk. I think I'm approaching temporary PRR live burn out (7 times in 14 months) especially with the setlist being extremely samey. I'd love to hear Goshen's Remains or Bullits Dominae live at some point.

Picked up the new Inside Out version of The Dark Third for a tenner, nice to have all the recorded stuff in together now  :)

Good to have met up with you guys! Nah, didn't get the interview - again!

The 'Kid A' track you refer to is actually the last section of a 7 minute long track called Golden Clothes - only available on the new 2CD version of The Dark Third. It was up on their MySpace site for a while though a few months ago but in obviously shite quality.

Overall I enjoyed the gig but am getting fed up with seeing them play shitty little venues with low stages! However, I'll almost certainly be heading up to Leicester (well it's only a 45 minutes drive) to see them play on Easter Monday (9th April) as part of a benefit gig for Shelter.

Cheers,

Simon

Downloaded Cupid Victorious after listening to all the stuff on the myspace page.
Interesting music. Vocal harmony is stunning. Arrangements are very creative and there's some really nice subtle atmospheric effects. Word clarity is weak though. There's only the vocal at the start and I still can't figure what the words are listening to most of the songs which is a big negative for me.

Initial impression to me is they are a proggy Evanescency sort of beast.
I'll keep an ear on their stuff because it certainly is promising but it definitely isn't giving me the "Wow MUST buy" like Porcupine Tree did when I first heard them.

I'll keep listening and see if it grows on me. It's certainly not unmusical and the vocal harmony is most pleasing if a tad synthetic sounding IMHO.

Picked up "The Dark Third" today. Just gave it the first spin. I think it's going to be a grower. There's a lot going on that I really like and a few standout moments made me sit up and pay attention (in The Exact Colour and Bullitts Dominae to be precise). I like it way more than the Cupid Victorious single I have to say. Some of the verse work is a little repetitive at times on initial listen but maybe it'll hook in with more listening. It's very dreamy. I can definitely see me reaching for this with a hangover. :)

Listening to this in the quiet of the morning (most pleasant) and my initial reactions to The Exact Colour and Bullitts Dominae remain. Brilliant stand out songs. The Twyncyn is some piece of work as well in the number of styles covered in one song.
To my ear they sound like two bands fighting for space. A very strong melodic style and a more straight ahead conventional prog rock type sound. I could take more of the former and less of the latter in their case TBH. A guitar solo or two wouldn't go amiss either in a few places IMHO.

I sort of agree there. Listen to the difference in the word clarity on something like Porcupine Tree's "Heart attack in a lay-by" between the CD and DVD-A. It could do the same for PRR I feel. I'm not sure there's enough going on in the PRR stuff though instrumentally and dynamically to make it a deeply rewarding surround for me.

Made a very nice accidental discovery the other day. I tranferred Bullits Dominae over to my ipod and the only other PRR track I had on it was Cupid Victorious.
Well, you should try listening to them in that order! The fit is really rather special. Had me giving CV a more positive appraisal. I like it now. :)

Just downloaded Cupid Victorious, giving it a few spins now. Like it :)

A lazy question, is this a singel from the next album, or just a stand alone songrelease?

Agree with Cpt Ron regarding PRR in general, where are the guitarsolos? Those of you who have seen this band live, are they improvising at all, or are they true to the albumversions?

As the next album won't be out until at least October this is probably a stand alone single release.  As for guitar solos - the lack of them doesn't bother me really - it's refreshing not to have them. The band aren't really virtuoso musicians and so tend to play to their strengths - i.e. songwriting, layered harmony vocals and some chunky riffing. Suits me fine!

They tend to play stuff to a fairly rigid pattern live, mainly due to the fact that they use backing tracks (like a lot of bands these days - Rush, P Tree, U2 etc.). Still great though!

I think PRR take a clever subtle approach in their texturing. I'm listening to this CD a lot and there is some wonderful background delicate stuff going on that you miss when just rocking along to it in the car. I'll have to recant my earlier comment about it maybe not really benefitting from a surround sound release. I lent the CD to my brother and he's converted as well. Another top band discovery! :)

Even thou we're supposed to be locked away in our little studio, we've decided to come out, soak in some fresh air, and play a speical little summer show.

As part of The Reading Fringe Festival we're playing a full live show at one of our favourite Reading haunts, The Oakford Social Club, on Sunday 19th August. And as this is a one-off event and as we want to stay up as late as you do, we will be taking it in turns to DJ until the bar runs dry. And the best part of all..... its a FREE and ticket less event!

See ya'll then! Looking forward to it!

Summer greetings to all,

We regret to inform you that we will not be playing the show on Sunday at the Oakford Social Club in Reading. Chloe has fallen ill with a nasty throat infection, a couple of us may be DJing but not too sure yet.

We are extremely sorry if anyone has made plans to come down. This was going to be one of our only shows for the next few months due to out recording commitments.

Again many apologies for any inconvenience.

As you may have noticed it has been quiet the last few weeks, we've all had a bit of a needed break, with commitments of moving houses and studios but now the PRR motor has started running again and the writing and recording of the new album is under way again.

We will be keeping you all updated with blogs and videos when we get the opportunity but it is going to be a busy 6 months in the Pure Reason camp. Busy but also exciting.

Hope you're all excited as us.

Jamie

Yeah, don't really know the area, but I'm sure a few hours 'preparation' can be arranged at a more suitable hostilery :)

Yeah, I ordered from Ticketweb and the only option was 'collect on door' which if I remember rightly was the same arrangement as their Camden Barfly gig last year.

Anyone know the capacity of the Water Rats?

They've been posting a few bits and pieces up on their MySpace page for a while now, but apart from that no-one's heard anything. The line-up hasn't changed since they were last out touring (supporting Blackfield and PT last year). Can't vouch for the haircut's effect on matters though, and the unsigned thing was speculation on my part I think - I may be wrong. I'm just looking forward to seeing them live again :)

Pure Reason Revolution: Live at NEARfest release announced
It is with great excitement that we announce the release of Pure Reason Revolution: Live at NEARfest 2007. The British upstart quartet took the NEARfest stage by storm with their unique combination of hard-driving riffs, Pink Floyd-esque soundscapes and fabulous vocal harmonies. Already known for their powerful live show, Pure Reason Revolution took it to yet another level with this energetic and raw performance. The band was in top form at NEARfest and is captured live for the first time on Live at NEARfest 2007. The album will be release on June 20, 2008, the first day of NEARfest X.

Spinning the new live album now; very, very good indeed. If only they could that kind of sound out of the front of house speakers at gigs :-/

Seriously there are melodies and riffs that I don't think I've noticed (or heard) before; Borgens Vor particularly surprised with a great guitar line near the beginning. Good to hear the bass in the mix too :)

Title: Re: Pure Reason Revolution

OK gig last night.  Sound was it's usual cacophonous mess of too loud bass & drums, indistinct vocals & buried guitars for the first three numbers or so. The first signal from the stage for 'more vocals' came about 30 seconds into the second number, sort it out people, does it have to be the same at every gig! ::)

Sound cleared up a bit later on & was quite acceptable by the end. A few new numbers played sounded decent though I'm not sure quite where they're going with the Techno leanings of a couple of them. I guess everything will make more sense when the new album finally sees the light of day.

For a band that sounds so great on album they're still struggling a bit to cope with it all live hence the liberal use of backing tapes. They seriously need to shake off the 'amateur hour' feel that surrounds them if they're to take a step up.

Picked up the 'Live at Nearfest' CD last night. Much credit to the engineer on this, it sounds very good, you can hear the guitars & vocals clearly which is unusual in a PRR live setting!

Talking of which....

We found it a bit odd when they played Deus ex Machina for a second time as the final part of the encore. Apparently someone triggered the wrong backing tape/sample & they just went with it instead of stopping & playing the scheduled Arrival/Intention Craft. ::)

22.11.2008 Germany, Aschaffenburg, Colos-Saal.
http://www.colos-saal.de

FINALLY those eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that recently on http://www.insideout.de it was mentioned that, "Pure Reason Revolution are on tour with Porcupine Tree in Spain at the moment and will release a new album next spring " not quite the way we had planned to tell you but it's true! We could have rushed it out by the end of this year but we felt it deserved better, so Feb/March 2009 it is.

There will be more news about the single/album releases an huge live tour and if we get a moment to spare we'll scribble down all the 'fun and games' we've had on this tour.

PRRx.

ok first impressions..

guitar is missing in action...they seem to have been listening to Eurythmics and Kraftwerk...clocks in at just over 40 mins.. you've got two tracks that have been around for awhile... tracks 6-9 wtf is going on ?  a bit disappointed... if i was the drummer i'd be looking around for a new job...

Sounds like a debate many of us have had already, maybe our fears are coming true.

Maybe the guitarist's amp broke down in the studio & they had to phone a friend to see if they had one that worked.... ::)

I've given it a few spins now, and it's definitely an album of two halves.

Unfortunately the first half, is mainly stuff we've all heard before. For me there's a cut off around track 6 Bloodless (which I actually don't mind) and the last three tracks are essentially 'dance' tracks with (to this mind) little live band involvement. Like Fishey mentioned to me in an email, you get the distinct impression there wasn't much material knocking around?

Without doubt, the best stuff is what we've already heard; Victorious Cupid being the best I think. Opener Les Malheurs is quite good though, and tracks 3 & 4 definitely up there too.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with the live show in March; will they be trying to play a lot of the new stuff live, or just stick to their regular show which we're all familiar with. I've got a ticket for the Brighton gig, which will be a good litmus test I think.

I have to confess I am sort of going off PRR. I loved Dark Third when it came out but of late when I listen to it I keep hankering for more guitar in the mix, possibly even a solo or two and after I finish a spin of it I always have to go and listen to something more overtly guitar driven. The very last time I listened to it I put on Steve Vai's "Alien Love Secrets" immediately afterwards and it had the effect of making me enjoy that one even more than usual.  8)

trying this one again this morning in the car... not impressed...  repetitive lyrics.. they even start repeating thelyric from Deux Ex Machina in some of the later tracks..laziness or cohesiveness.. not sure...

the second half of the cd is fairly rank...

I didn't realise that Jon wrote, recorded and produced everything (bar a few contributions). I knew he was the main man, but it seems AVO is definitely very much his baby.

PRR are supporting The Boxer Rebellion (who are actually pretty good themselves, and were main support at PRR's big Islington Academy gig way back... bizarre!) on a short UK tour in April/May.

Thursday 30th April: London Scala
Friday 1st May: Cambridge Junction
Saturday 2nd May: Sheffield Leadmill

I got the TBR's CD off the back of that Islington gig; I'll have to dig it out and see if it's still good, might help make my mind up about going to the London date.

This from myspace, I might be up for the Scala show, just need to check the date....anyone else fancy it ? :

Firstly we all want to thank everyone that came to see us at Waterpop Festival. Apologies we cut the set a little short but due to a technical-day-from-hell we had no choice but to pull the last 2 songs. Despite the tech problems the festival was an amazing experience with a great atmosphere & the very best Dutch hospitality.

We have recently announced a few preview shows. At these shows we’ll be showcasing material from our 3rd album ‘Hammer & Anvil’.

Sept 17th Club NME, Koko, London

Sept 18th Southsea Festival - Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth

Sept 28th - Gebaude 9, Koln

Sept 29th – International, Paris

Sept 30th – Bitterzoet, Amsterdam

Dec 09th - The Scala, London

As the Scala show will be our biggest UK show to date & the finale of the tour - we thought we would make a grandiose occasion out of it. There’ll be an extended set with songs from all 3 albums…some you might not have heard live before, with some little surprises thrown in too!

The show will also be filmed & available soon after as a limited edition/numbered DVD available to advance ticket holders only at half price!

Here’s how it works; Just show your ticket booking ref number at the merchandise stall, leave behind your contact details along with £5 & soon after (around Jan 1st) you’ll receive your copy (signed if you want) with your name listed on the DVD sleeve. There will also be a small number of copies available on mail order £10 each (£12 outside UK) more details soon.

This from myspace, I might be up for the Scala show, just need to check the date....anyone else fancy it ? :

Possibly, might give them another go if the new stuff's sounding better.  Will leave it til nearer the time to make a decision though.

Apologies we cut the set a little short but due to a technical-day-from-hell we had no choice but to pull the last 2 songs.

Some things haven't changed then! ::)

Good grief! Is the same band that did the magnificent "Dark Third". This sounds utterly woeful.

I saw them yesterday at Bitterzoet, an intimate club in Amsterdam, playing a great show with excellent sound!
The new songs were pretty heavy and did elevate me, and the encore rocked me out of the place.
(I heared the French crowd went crazy earlier this week)

I think this was the setlist:
1.Les Malheurs
2.Black Morning
3.Valour
4.Twyncyn/Trembling Willows
5.Last Man, Last Round
6.Deus ex Machina
7.Fight Fire
8.AVO
Encore:
9.The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning
10.The Intention Craft

Well at least I look forward to the new record.  8)
Thanks for the Youtube links  :).

They're clearly never going to match TDT but I thought the first 2 tracks sounded better than most of the 2nd album, not too sure about the 3rd though.

just listening to these now-
Fight Fire with Fire sounds very repetitive and no melody or harmonies which is what I loved them for  :-\
Black Mourning is much better with their trademark harmonies - is it a deliberate nod to Fleetwood Mac's Little Lies at the start? I'd like to think it is.
Valour too much electronica for my liking - ok, but the vocals seem to be more in the background on this one - so will get swamped live if this is the effect they are after. Bit dull really.
Disappointed overall,  but I'll probably buy the album.

the folks on PRR forum are creaming themselves over this release.. manged to give it a few .istens now.. yes  abit more coherent than the last album of muck... still very keyboard driven to my ears.. guitar is missing in action somewhat.. vocal harmonies are up to the usual high standard..plenty of nice hooks to get your gums round... i'm still not getting the track "Blitzkrieg" at all...a definite improvement even ifit does sound like Depeche Mode with their amps turned up to 11 in a lot of cases...

I've only given it one or two spins, but I like it on first impressions. There are elements of both previous albums on this release I think; tracks like Black Mourning, Patriarch and the great dreamy closer Armistice should appeal to TDT die-hards I reckon. I really like the lead track Fight Fire, that sounds awesome cranked up.

Sonically, it's still quite keyboards dominated I think, but the guitars are definitely there. Not necessarily as 'cranked up and face-meltingly riff-tastic', or whatever it was Jamie told me during recording, but there nonetheless. There's nothing there to rival the magnificence of Bright Ambassadors... or Trembling Willows, but there are a decent number of solid tracks which is more than can be said of AVO. Not convinced with all of it however, and Mr.Fish you've hit the nail squarely on the head with Blitzkrieg; the kind of aimless and repetitive track that'll keep the nay-sayers heading away instead of back!

I said I'd wait until I heard this before deciding whether to go see them live again, and on this evidence I think I will. It's a shame I'm double-booked for the London show in December, and hope they announce a full UK-tour in support of the album for next year.

On the whole, a pretty solid effort I think :)

I like it mate, a lot more immediate than AVO for me, and better songs all-round. I think it's kind of mix of TDT and AVO, and there's plenty of both elements in the new one. I still think they're leaning away from their debut, which won't please many on here!

Latest PRR news :

Hi There!

Everybody knows the moons made of cheese! But does everybody know that Moonloop open-air festival is made out of licorice? Well it is & it's in the Crimea, Ukraine, Cape Kazantip 12/8/11. It's taking place on a jetty of licorice land that extends into the black licorice sea. Aphex Twin headlines our night. We'll all be wearing skintight black licorice trousers.

Next up, BIG "DARK THIRD" TOUR: We're currently booking a tour that will take place between late October-November & will be a first for PRR, being a 2-hour/2-part concert.

Part 1 will be songs from "Amor Vincit Omnia" & "Hammer & Anvil", Part 2 will be the original "Dark Third" in its entirety, including 'Goshen's Remains' and 'He Tried to Show Them Magic' which we have never played live before!

Dates confirmed so far:

Nov 11th - The Netherlands, Zootermeer, de Boerderij

Nov 12th – The Netherlands, Uden, De Pul

Dates for the full tour will follow shortly and will include shows in France, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Germany, Belgium and the UK but after these concerts there are no plans for any further shows.

PRRx.

I thought I would start a new thread in Events for this.

Sounds very interesting - i might have to make the London gig.
Hopefully they wont:
- cancel/rearrange the tour;
- add 5 support bands and leave themselves no time to play anything
or
- completely screw up the sound at the venue  ::)
