Title: Photographing gigs
Post by: Reg on October 01, 2007, 15:03:38 pm
Someone suggested a thread on its own for this - so here it is.

Please feel free to post your favourite settings or hints and tips for taking piccies of gigs.

With the topical nature of this thread (Rush, they are a coming!), I thought I'd sticky it.

So - fire away gang.

Pictures I've taken at gigs can be seen here

http://vmkqube.multiply.com/

Some quite good ones I think.

I find that using a flash (if you're far away it's pointless anyway) takes all the life out of a picture, but then if you don't use the flash you can get blur due to lack of light. So it's really a hard job trying to pick and choose moments when the stage lighting will allow for a good photo.

Well - I've just sussed out that I can use the Intelligent Auto mode on my new camera with Flash OFF - so I'll try this mode first.

A Nikon Coolpix I used had a fireworks setting which gave excellent shots if you weren't too close to the front. It picked up good detail through the darkness to the action on stage.

My pics are here :

Usually shoot with a Canon 350d SLR - use either a 50mm f1.8 lens or 70-200mm f2.8 zoom. Won't be trying to get that into any of the Rush gigs though ! :)

You can get some great results with little cameras though, my mate took this one of Steve Hogarth at the Union Chapel last week, with no flash - was most impressed, I couldn't have managed it.

Thanks for that, I'll keep it in mind, I think mine has the same setting.

QuoteI find that using a flash (if you're far away it's pointless anyway) takes all the life out of a picture, but then if you don't use the flash you can get blur due to lack of light.

[boring]
Strictly speaking, it isn't the lack of light which causes the blur but the fact that the camera had to set a slow shutter speed to get the correct exposure and in that time, either your subject or - more likely - your hand moved.

In auto mode, the camera will just try to get a reasonable balance between shutter speed and aperture to get the right amount of light. Without knowing what your subject is, it may use the focus distance to guess what your doing. If the focus point is close, it will assume a portrait and set wide aperature, fast shutter speed. If the focus is distance, it will set narrow aperture, slow shutter speed.

This is why using the presets is a good idea. For example, if the camera knows you're taking a sports shot, it knows the subject is moving so puts the emphasis on fast shutter speed to freeze the motion and tries the widest aperture it can. In the case of fireworks, it wants to get some detail (which requires a narrowish aperature) and may decide that a small amount of blur is artistic and therefore seelct a medium shutter speed. If you don't hold the camera really steady, the blur will be much worse.

There is a simple rule of thumb that says the maximum shutter speed you can successfully hand-hold a camera for is 1/focal lenth. So, if you camera says it is 50mm, you can hand hold without blur upto 1/50th second. Most cameras will want to select a shutter speed of around 1/10 of a second at max aperture in typical gig conditions. In these situations, changing the ISO equivalance is the right thing to to as it gives the camera far more latitude in selecting the correct settings to get the right exposure. In the same scenario, changing a digital camera's ISO (which may default to 50-100) to the 400 setting, means you only need a quarter (or less) of the time to take the picture. The 1/10 exposure becomes 1/40th which is much closer to the hand hold limit so less blur.

So, I suggest you choose a preset which most closely matches what you are doing which in this case, Fireworks or Nighttime Landscape are probably the best. But also work out if your camera will expoit the ISO settings automatically or if you have to do it manually - it makes a huge difference. And hold the camera as steady as you can and/or use any built in image stabilisation.

But do you care about blur? If you look at Mark's examples, the superb head shot was taken with a very fast high quality lens costing several hundred pounds (L-Series Mark?) and is razor sharp. The other one, is actually quite badly blurred and is lacking in detail (wide aperture, slow shutter speed - camera was maxed out). But as a momento of a gig, who really cares?
[/boring]

I kinda knew all that, but it was just easier to say lack of light :P

If you look at the shots on my site, I actually prefer the arty ones with a bit of blur anyway, but yeah I should try and play about more with the settings :)

I wish, I couldn't stretch to one unfortunately - it's the Sigma 70-200mm F:2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM and yep, it cost more than the camera ! :)

Love it to bits though and wouldn't be without it, must be a phallic thing  ;)

Shot a guy called Stoney at the Night & Day in Manchester last night, lighting wasn't brilliant although not bad for what's effectively a pub.

Used the 50mm f1.8, set to aperture priority, ISO 1600 as usual ! :-)

This is a processed .raw file - have altered the white balance slightly to compensate for the stage lighting.

Yeah Carrie said last night "it's a shame all the best ones are when they're concentrating", that's when they're still enough! There are loads of blurry ones of course.

Some of my favourite pictures are when the colours blur together a little though, like the Sonic Youth ones.

Bit of a strange one this. Yesterday there was a local Country Fair in Fryent Country Park, literally just over the road from me. Went over for a look with Mrs H & there was the usual stuff you'd expect from these sort of affairs, local people selling home-grown/made produce, sheepdogs rounding up ducks, a falconry display, a fun fair for the kids etc. Was delighted to see a music tent & particualrly chuffed to see British bluesman Ian Siegal was doing 2 half hour solo acoustic stints. Curious place for him to play in front of a (very) few people who knew him, a few disinterested onlookers, barking dogs & sword-fighting kids (don't ask...). Siegal was excellent in trying circumstances & I can't complain at seeing someone I actually like for free just over the road. Happened to have my proper camera with me so snapped a few pics.

Here's some pix from last years Rush tour. Taken on my Canon A95 compact. (No way I was going to get my Canon 20D into those gigs!) :D

Btw, I put these through TinyPic and for whatever reason they've come out a lot less sharp than they actually are. Disappointing. :( :-\

This last one was taken from the right-hand side of the stage and was deliberately taken with a shutter speed of 1/30 second. I love this picture. It came out way better than I expected. :)

For those of us wth point and shoot cameras the best bet is to get right at the front and click away with and without flash and hope for the best. Yup - some of the blurred ones come out really great! What did we do before digital cameras eh? :-)

Hmmm, there's a link on Joe's website to the RAH site & their 'No cameras or recording devices' policy. Like that's stopped anybody before. Suppose I'd better not chance it with the SLR, might take the compact & play it by ear.

Think I'll try giving the SLR a run out at the Hawkwind gig in St. Albans the following week instead.

Not surprised to be honest - but it's daft when you've got an artist who openly permits both photography and recording yet the venue doesn't allow it. What 'copyright', for instance, is being compromised as far as the RAH are concerned?

We had the same issue at the Lowry for BJH a couple of weeks ago for what was essentially a private hire - yet they still jumped on people who tried to take pictures with camera phones!

might the policy be for the classical music there, more though?
I know artists who would go APE if their performance was recorded or photographed without their permission and it is essentially a classical music venue what with the proms 'n' all.
Not that I'm bothered, just saying...

I'm guessing it'll be ok on the night but I think I'll leave the SLR at home just in case. Most venues go through the motions by printing the same warnings on the tickets but it never seems to stop anybody. Anyway, if the artist says it's ok I think the venue should respect that.

I am not sure of the details but the venue has some copyright on events that take place there.

For example some metallica shows are not available on livemetallica as the venue wanted to charge Metallica too much to record their own show  :o

It is all crazy  :-\

Finally got round to trying out the SLR at the Hawkwind St. Albans gig last night. Usual problems with movement & getting used to the various settings available. Not perfected it yet by any means but got a few half-decent ones.....

Bit of a rubbish picture but I like it because it reminds a bit of something on the Space Ritual cover...

some nice pics in there mate....I like the last 2 particularly....

you might want to try flickr to host them, seems to allow much large file sizes  ;)

I'm fast coming to the conclusion that gig photography is best left to the experts !

Went to see Carina Round on Tuesday, who was excellent, anyway, pics.

Support act Anna Calvi, who I think people on here might like, boy could she play guitar and her solos were very bluesy but rocking.

Went to see Alice Cooper last night at the Apollo, we had tickets in the 3rd row of the balcony - for those of you that know the  Apollo - the balcony sides do curl round a fair bit; anyway i borrowed Mrs Ps flashy Canon G9 and got these - messed about with the settings a bit as i wasnt familiar with it, however the zoom has blown me away...

yeah - cool pics. I wish JB had used those ramps more. He only went up them twice at the beginning and the end. I could see him better up there as I was standing. Oh well. We were about 10 people deep from the front, so not bad.

Joanne Shaw Taylor last night at  The Caves in Edinburgh. I didn't get any really good shots, the lighting was terrible (12 blue lights, all behind the band except for 4 pointing at the crowd) and I don't like to use flash. This was the best that I got.

As promised some pics from last weekend's High Voltage Festival.  I'll try & do them in order of appearance starting with Saturday at the Prog stage. Many more to come as I sort them.

5 minutes into the biggest gig of her life Touchstone's Kim Seviour realises with some horror that she forgot to spray her pits that morning...

...which doesn't stop her rehearsing for her forthcoming audition for the new Karate Kid movie...

...or poking guest guitarist John Mitchell painfully up the hooter mid-solo...

A normal pic of Touchstone without a witty caption...

Pendragon's Nick Barrett invites the crowd to clap along to a bit that is so Prog it can't possibly be clapped along to...

Appropriately, the Prog stage had a pointy hat...

It's what he's stopped doing to his hair! Apparently that's the natural look and he's given up using the straighteners after a journalist said he looked like Justin Bieber! Quote, "I have NOT had a perm!!!!!!!!"

First try at uploading so probably not as good as they could be and on a cheap compact but for what they're worth here are a few from a Scorpions gig at the Hammy O a couple of years ago

A few from the excellent Tedeschi Truvcks Band show at Shepherds Bush Empire last week.  Taken with the compact from Level 1 so not too great, I'll post some of my Warren Haynes ones tomorrow, same venue & location, taken with the SLR, you can see the difference somewhat.

Some excellent shots Mark  and some of them are very unforgiving Surprised Pete Way is still alive given his history.

Having just about made it through a Morse set recently, albeit with the aid of headphones, I sympathise with your comments. Such a shame, his music deserves a much wider audience Still, even Bob Dylan had his religious phase....maybe there is some hope he'll snap out of it too.

Brilliant.  Stage at the city hall was way too high from front row, so didnt bother last night.  It was a relief when he asked everyone to stand 3/4 way through.

Nice shots Mark - did you have a press pass for the pit? - and what was the phone for - did he take calls on it?

Nice pics Mark. Worked out well for you, with the posn of the monitors. Did you have your other 'recording device' hooked up too?  ;)

I was wondering about the phone too - didnt see him use it or even touch it? Might have been when I went for a posh p*ss tho....

No, taken from 4th row centre.  The phone was just an odd prop I think, not used.

Had the very same experience there for Toto a few years back - was so relieved when others around stood up (for the 'hits')!

I recently "upgraded" to a Sony DSC-HX20V (specs: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony---DSC-HX20V-18.2-Megapixel-Digital-Camera---Black/4996146.p?id=1218595788390&skuId=4996146)

Very happy with it so far, about the same size as your usual compact cameras so it's small enough to take into gigs, it's probably on the expensive side for a compact but much cheaper than a DSLR. My posts since the 4th of August have been with the new one. Still getting to grips with the settings a little bit. 20x optical zoom is great though.

Was quite pleased with the pics I got on the last Rush tour but am contemplating acquiring a compact that performs better in low light for the gigs later this month. It's a thoroughly decent snapshot camera but a few years old and not particularly high spec even when I bought it. A more modern sensor is required, I think.

I'm considering using my Nikon D3200 on the up-coming Rush tour. Being a DSLR it's not very conspicuous and I'm slightly wary of using it. Anyone ever used a SLR to photograph gigs in an arena and if so did they have any problems from security?

The security at Glasgow is always quite lax so I might give it a go there.

I have been tentatively thinking about taking my Pentax DSLR with a prime lens to make it look a bit less inconspicuous. But I've concluded that it's just not worth the risk.

The worst that would happen is they ask you to stop. As long as you do so they should be fine with that. I can't see them taking it off you unless you carry on shooting.

The worst that can happen is they search you on the door & won't let you in with it.  Considered it many a time at arenas but it's a bit of a lottery at somewhere like the O2, sometimes you get the pat-down, sometimes not.

Plus, even if you get in, you may end up with mad paranoia whilst taking snaps.

Im planning to be alot less trigger happy this tour and just enjoy.

Here's an example of how a good photo editing program can rescue an image:

I used the GIMP but I would guess Photoshop has a similar smart selection tool that will allow you to select, darken and blur the background a bit to bring out a subject.
Title: Re: Photographing gigs
Post by: Slim on May 30, 2013, 11:10:36 am
The bass strings wouldn't have been touched by what I did to the background; nor would anything else on the 'unblurred' part - if they do look different it's probably because I used a different value for the final sharpening, or possibly the contrast.

Gov't Mule, Under The Bridge 4.7.13.  Big struggle with the lighting but salvaged a few.

So, Cheap Trick - at last, someone I've heard of Chris...  :D  ;)

Seriously though, was this another freebie in the park, or what?
Details please, mate!  :)

It rained almost all night and heavily in parts. It was at Coney Island and the venue was a bit rubbish to be honest, a stage in a big car park, it's pretty big and was billed as a free concert but the free area was way at the back otherwise you had to pay (that picture is using my 20x zoom). Nowhere to buy any food or drink either.

I'd say about 300 made it in total (where they could fit a few thousand), most would have been put off by the weather and the fact that they played the same place in 2011 but only managed 5 songs before they had to stop because of the rain, so I guess people were worried of a repeat (and the main reason I didn't pay to sit just in case they pulled the plug). Openers The Cringe were terrible and I was starting to think that it was going to be a horrible night, but Cheap Trick really put on a good performance and it was definitely worth getting rained on in the end!

The last one is just wonderfully weird - technically crap, cool to look at!
