It's with a sad heart that I have to pass on this news to you all...
Mick Burnett the Editor/Founder of "The Spirit of Rush" fanzine passed away this morning after a heart attack...
With regards to any other details I really don't have any, I'll let you know here when I know.
It seems like the following line has been used too much in recent years...
"Suddenly you were gone, from all the lives you left your mark upon"
Here is a picture taken in better times - Couterparts tour 1994.
I didn't subscribe to the fanzine or have any contact with him, but any loss of life is tragic :(
Mick did A LOT to keep the Rush flame burning in the UK with The Spirit of Rush fanzine and the UK Conventions. He was a larger-than-life character, funny and a typical Londoner.
The last time I saw him was at the Dream Theater concert in Manchester back in February. He was in good form as usual.
At least he got to witness Rush's triumphant return to the stage on the first leg of the VT tour.
I'm sorry to hear that.
Deepest thoughts to those of you who knew him.
This such a shock..I've subcribed to the fanzine since '88.But sadly never got to meet Mick personally. This is a sad day :'(
Very sad news indeed. I've been a subscriber to SOR for many years and always appreciated Micks efforts, particularly in the quiet times when it would no doubt have been easy to give up.
I only met Mick in passing but never heard a bad word about him. He will be missed. Condolences to all his family and friends.
I subscribed to The Spirit Of Rush from Issue One and was always aware of what a labour of love the fanzine was and how much pride Mick had in creating it and watching it prosper over the years.
I'll never forget the look of happiness that was on his face on the night of the first Convention back in 1996 at Leicester as everybody was getting down to The Jack Secret Show and the way that at all of the subsequent conventions he found it so incredible to see the attendances grow and familiar faces return time and time again.
He was always gracious enough to take time out of organising the days proceedings in order to have a good old natter about his beloved Rush and share a laugh and a drink.
Rest in peace Mick. You will be missed.
I just got a phone call from my brother about 10 minutes ago to give me this sad news. It just goes to show how many lives Mick touched through his labour of love and how much he'll be missed by us all. God bless Mick.
The touching picture on the homepage says it all. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief. I last saw Mick in November at The Spirit Of Rush tribute show in London where he was, as ever, promoting the fanzine with his usual enthusiasm.
"When I heard that he was gone I felt a shadow cross my heart."
I've been subscribing to SOR since the late 80's and, though I never met Mick, I know that his dedication and enthusiasm gave us European Rush fans a much needed forum.
This really is a sad day and my condolences go out to his family and friends.
A very sad day for his family and all SOR subscribers.
He will be missed. :'(
Can't believe it's been 16 years
Absolutely Stewart - Last I spoke with him was just a few weeks before - he brought me back a T-shirt from one of the VT shows he was at. I have very fond memories of the fanzine and early conventions
