Title: Favourite Christmas Songs?
Post by: Slim on December 15, 2017, 09:52:21 AM
Mine are:

Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
Greg Lake - I Believe In Father Christmas
Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody
Bing Crosby - White Christmas
Pogues / Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York
Paul McCartney - Once Upon A Long Ago
Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day
Bing Crosby & David Bowie - Little Drummer Boy

I think that's pretty much it, though at this time of year I like all of them - even the arguably awful ones by Shakin' Stevens and Mariah Carey.

The status of the McCartney one as a Christmas song is questionable but it always reminds me of the first time I heard it, driving back home to Hartlepool along the A1 from a day out Christmas shopping in Newcastle. It just seemed to complete the Christmas mood perfectly.

Weird to think that those '70s ones are now older than Bing's original White Christmas from 1942 was, when I was a kid.

Greg Lake - I believe in Father Christmas - pretty much head and shoulders above anything else - then Slade and Wizard.

The Yobs Christmas album is a bit of fun too  8)

Greg Lake is probably tops for me. Runners up would be:
Wizzard
Elton
Chris De Burgh
Slade

Another vote for Greg and Chris. Fairytale of New York too.

Really like The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood too.

A few shouts in no particular order . . .

Band Aid - Do They Know Its Christmas?
(yes, I really do like this song)

Vaughn Monroe - Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!
(purely because of Die Hard - the best ever Christmas film)

Eartha Kitt - Santa Baby

James’s first two are respectively my top two; I adore Christmas Wrapping, love the story it tells and it’s loaded with sentiment and nostalgia for me.  Pure magic.

Greg Lake’s song still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.  Utterly wonderful.

Wizzard’s song is appropriately evergreen and has one of the all-time killer key changes.  Always great fun, that one.

Neville Holder and James Lea deservedly do very well out of their song year after year;  it’s one of the first songs I learned to strum on guitar and it’s actually quite cleverly written.  So that’s a special one also.

And yes, Fairytale is terrifically rousing and rightly a classic.

There’s not many I dislike actually; I switch off Coldplay’s dismal, derivative effort when it somehow sneaks on to radio playlists; same goes for that awful, overblown bilge from Leona Lewis.  And it goes without saying that Cliff’s mawkish, pious claptrap gets very short shrift.

However, I do like those that aren’t strictly Xmas songs but are associated with the season, like Stay Another Day and Freiheit’s Keeping The Dream Alive.  I once had an Xmas compilation album that included Sadeness Part 1 by Enigma - a good, atmospheric track but I’ve always found its inclusion bizarre.

Interesting, never thought of that as a Christmas song. Good tune though.

I missed Can You Stop The Cavalry by Jona Lewie from my list.

One that I will admit that I miss hearing around this time of year, though it was never a favourite, is the Gary Glitter one. Like the Shaking Stevens one and the Mariah Carey one I don't particularly like it in its own right as a song, but it was part of the fabric of Christmas. Of course nobody wants to hear it now.

I really liked this one but it never really caught on as a Christmas tune:

Apparently from the end of '79, could have sworn it was Christmas 1980.

And ah yes, Eartha Kitt and Santa Baby - thanks Reg.  I remember her best for her performances in Batman, but what a voice.

It was a hit in December 1984, knocked off number 1 by Band Aid. The video was nativity themed  :o

I'd forgotten. Never really caught on as a Christmas tune, did it? Not one that really gets played this time of year.
