Title: My Rock Photo Archive
Post by: rascal houdi on March 01, 2014, 00:04:55 am
As a few of you on here may know, I was a bit of a budding Rock photographer (strictly amateur) back in the day.  A couple of months ago I started sorting through all my old negs & thought it was about time I got around to scanning them for posterity as they've been sitting there doing nothing for a quarter of a century or more.  So, I've started what is turning into a huge, time-consuming project but I think the results are worth it.

The period covered is late '78 to '87 by which time it was getting harder to get the camera in without hassle.  Mainly centred around the legendary Hammersmith Odeon with a few other London & provincial venues thrown in along with the odd festival.  I've decided to do pretty much everything (in date order, earliest at bottom of page) so there will be some inevitable lapses in taste as we head into the mid-'80's. The aim is to upload on a weekly basis until I'm done.  As I've only done around 15-20% so far this should be going for about a year. I've uploaded the first batch here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/118766505@N06/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/118766505@N06/)

For those of you unfamiliar with Flickr, Photostream is the default page which gives you smaller versions of everything.  Click on the desired image for full size + caption.  I've also started organising them into sets (see 'Sets' tab) by artist which will come into it's own as  I upload more by the same artists.

Enjoy!

Not too shabby :)

The UFO ones gave me flashbacks - even though I was at Sheffield.
Reminded me that I didn't get to see Rush on the Hemisphere's tour 'cos it was too close to my O-levels according to the owd bloke who shelled out for my concert tickets.

Very good Mark, especially like the colours in most pictures.
I am sure everyone tries to take pictures but is very rare the result is good.
Yours are very good, which is quite a feat.

Fantastic stuff mate....there's a fair few of those that I was probably at as well -although I'd be guessing at the exact dates. I wish I'd kept all of my ticket stubs :( When you've finished this project I'm looking forward to the "complete audio archive".... ;)

I was at those Rush gigs - May 4th & 6th at Hammy Odeon, right in the middle of my O levels if I recall (same for Rasc, as we were in the same class!) - dunno how I got away with it tbh  :o But it probably accounts for some of the results I got  :-[

Fantastic! I was unfortunately born too late to appreciate these moments myself (I've always had bad timing) so I thank you for a great glimpse at gigs I could have gone to if I'd had the good sense to be born before 1984!

Don't recall Lerxst's hair being that short in 1980 - but I did see them at Leeds Queen's Hall, so the lighting rig was onlt about three foot above the stage...

Christ.  How old were you in 1980, if you don't mind me asking.

Anyone can take half decent pictures now with the kind of compacts that are available couple with expansive lightshows...but to have taken shots of this quality way back then is bloody impressive.

Very jealous that, at a time when I was listening to most of these bands, I was too young to have seen them...

By 'eck, the Reading and Donington ones take me back. Wonder how many TNMSers were at them?

When I was at Uni in Birmingham, I used to bump into 'Big' John Thomas a lot. We both used to go and read the music papers in WH Smith on the same day.

I was at Reading in 80....

I also saw Kiss at Wembley, but might have been 81...we missed the last direct train to Hemel and had to walk home from Watford (around 8 miles in a denim jacket, t-shirt and cowboy boots)....it snowed, so the September ticket date doesn't match up....
Title: Re: My Rock Photo Archive
Post by: rascal houdi on March 16, 2014, 01:33:33 am
Not sure when that would have been, I also have shots from Oct 83 + Oct 84, unlikely it would have been snowing then. I'm not sure there were any Kiss gigs between 80-83 as I'm pretty sure I've seen them every time they've played there & I don't have any ticket stubs between those dates.

Nice to see a slim Chris Glen (w/MSG), having last seen a much larger version with SAHB a few years ago  :o

A few of them not great quality but I'll wager there's not a lot of shots in existence of Diamond Head at the Electric Stadium in Chadwell Heath, Essex, a venue with obvious delusions of grandeur as it was actually the backroom of a pub. ::)

More great photos.

What gear did you use for these and what sort of film were you shooting with ?
Title: Re: My Rock Photo Archive
Post by: rascal houdi on March 29, 2014, 09:30:05 am
Never had anything special at all gear wise.  First batch of shots (up to Whitesnake 79) were taken with a Zorki Russian-made rangefinder camera just with the standard lens.  The rest were taken with a Cosina CSM, which I believe was one of the cheapest SLRs on the market back then, using standard lens & a Tamoron 135mm telephoto lens borrowed from my dad.  I also got an 80-200mm zoom later on.
Ironically, I did finally treat myself to a decent Canon SLR just about the time it got too much hassle getting the camera in & never got round to using it in a gig situation.

Always used Kodak 400asa film.

One final question - print film or slides ? I used to take a load of gig photos (not as good as yours :( ) and I tried both. The colours were great if you shot using slides but they were a pain to view and to show people.

Super work, Rasc. Nice one. What did you use to scan the negatives? I have a cheap negative scanner which works OK for some shots but tends to blow out well-lit scenes. It's a lot of work cloning out the dust spots as well, did you clean the negatives first or put the hard work in with an image editor?
Title: Re: My Rock Photo Archive
Post by: rascal houdi on March 30, 2014, 02:04:03 am
I've got a new Epson V370 flatbed scanner with film scanning facility, very pleased with it.  Did a fair bit of reading up on it & the reviews were far more positive than the dedicated neg scanners, unless you're talking lots more money for a really good one.

I clean everything up in Photoshop.  There's a dust removal facility in the scanner software but it's a bit limited.  A fair few of the negs have scratches & other marks on them so I clone those out as well.  It is a lot of work, along with colour balancing, but worthwhile I think.  I've rescued quite a few that I initially thought were beyond saving.  I've also resurrected some shots that I originally would have ignored for one reason or another as Photoshop enables me to do certain things that I couldn't do via the normal print process many years ago.

Is it this one? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-Perfection-scanner-ReadyScan-technology/dp/B009EOPQD4

Superb results for a piece of kit less than £100 if so.

I don't use Photoshop myself but the image manipulation software can work wonders these days - the GIMP even has a refocus plugin that can intelligently rescue slightly out-of-focus images.

Mark - weren't a lot of those original pics from when you worked at Tudor in Cricklewood? That must have helped with getting the prints done to how you wanted them and at a 'reasonable' cost  ;)

As I said Saturday, loving the Chadwell Heath pics  8) Just as pokey as I remembered it.

Yes. Unfortunately the Sabbath support slot in 78 was a few months before I started taking pics & cameras were never allowed in at the Rainbow where I saw the 3 headline shows they did in 79/80. One of the  few key bands of the era that I didn't photograph I'm afraid.

Ah, a shame.  I imagine that back in the day, VH would have been eminently photographable (not sure thats a word, but you catch my drift).

Love the Rush ones here....

Also, kudos for getting such good seats....back in the pre-internet days, one had to rely on Sounds for details of tours...and by the time it came out on a Wednesday, most of the good ones had gone....thank God for the internet...

Anyway - good work!

They were indeed.  I was a huge Sabs fan at the time but VH wiped the floor with them that night. I remember we had tickets near the back of the stalls but before VH came on we just strolled to the front & stayed there all night.  Got soaked in champagne when Roth grabbed a magnum in both hands, shook them up & let us have it.  He also claimed "I've heard London is the Rock 'n' roll capital of the world!" which sounded great until you realised he said it every night, substituting the name of the town.  Wouldn't have worked quite as well at Lewisham Odeon methinks...

The 1st Rainbow show was particularly memorable as well.  Again not great seats but piled down the front as seemingly did everyone else, clambering all over the front blocks until all the seats were reduced to a pile of rubble. Carnage, but all good fun at the time & no one got hurt. :)

Often involved a lot of pestering the Odeon by phone when tour rumours started to try & get the jump on the announcements in Sounds, getting up early on a Saturday (no mean feat for a 14 or 15-year old!) to queue outside the box office before it opened.  Also, a bit later on, Mrs H used to nip up there in her lunch break as she worked in town, so as soon as Sounds appeared on a Weds she'd be up there a couple of hours later..

Those were the days, when the tickets you got were equated to the amount of effort you put in!

Did he not actually say that about Lewisham ? I seem to remember it being a running joke in Sounds and Kerrang.

The 1st Rainbow show was particularly memorable as well.  Again not great seats but piled down the front as seemingly did everyone else, clambering all over the front blocks until all the seats were reduced to a pile of rubble. Carnage, but all good fun at the time & no one got hurt. :)

The way I remember that 1st Hammersmith gig, Mark, we took our seats at the back of the stalls (row CC, ie 3 rows from the back) for a while before VH were due to come on, and then decided to go and get t-shirts etc before the start. Up to that point, I remember reading the hype about VH in Sounds but cant remember if we'd actually heard any of the 1st album. When we got back into the stalls, everyone had piled down the front without any objection from the security so we followed suit and stayed there for the rest of the night  8)

I don't remember the champagne, Mark, but whatever bubbly may have landed on us would have gotten washed off by the water Ozzy chucked over us  :)

I bought some photos of RUSH at Wembley arena in '83 once from I'm think it was a Pete Way photography? I ordered them through one of the music magazines, probably Kerrang. They were no better than these that Rascal has taken, and weren't cheap at the time.

I remember DLR spraying the champers while the strobes were going, which was visually quite impressive (don't think I'd seen strobes before that!  ::)   )

I was at the Edinburgh equivalent of those gigs. I remember Blackfoot being a good night out. Krokus were supported by Magnum on that tour weren't they? I think them and Mama's Boys were perennial support bands in he early to mid 80's.

One of the best live bands I've ever seen. Such a shame their career over here was so fleeting.  No sooner had they built momentum, culminating with the terrific Highway Song Live then the record company tried to steer them into AOR territory which, unsurprisingly, failed miserably.

Inspired me to listen to that record on Spotify.  I've was aware of them back then - my big Brother had Tomcattin' and Marauder - but I'd never actually heard them until this morning.  Stonking stuff.  I reckon they'd be massive if they were at this stage of their career today.

Off to ebay to look for a vinyl copy...

Blackfoot should've been as big as Skynyrd. It's to my eternal regret that I never saw them live :( Back in those days it was a case of beer or gig and beer kept winning...
I treasure my signed vinyl copy of Marauder. One of the top 10 albums evah.

Nice to see The Rods in there too, think I'll go give my copy of the Full Throttle EP a spin.

Yes, 1st tour with Bruce.  Just out of interest, here's my ticket for the 1st ever gig with Bruce, unfortunately I didn't take the camera for whatever reason:

I'd like to think so, yes.  The early '80's morphing into the mid-'80's was a strange time looking back.  I can see it all happening as I go through my photos.  I'm up to mid-'82 at the moment but looking through what's coming up you can see the hair getting bigger, the guitars getting pointier & the music getting wimpier.  As the decade wore on proper Rock was at a premium &, other than the stalwarts, we ended up listening to & watching all sorts of bands that haven't stood the test of time well at all (IMO of course, all you big hair, wimp-rock fans out there).  It was all this that Blackfoot unfortunately got caught up in & it was never going to work.

Oz's then GF blagged us passes to the liggers backstage bit & the enclosure out front between the 2 stages.  Didn't have access to the artists backstage bit but they would occasionally wander through.  When Twisted Sister had finished their set I went through to the back, heard a commotion behind me, turned around & there they were mugging for the photographers & I happened to be Johnny-on-the-spot.  After Blackfoot's set (band of the weekend by a mile & one of the best festival sets I've seen by anyone) I spotted Jackson Spires & politely asked if I could take a picture & he graciously obliged.   Much later in the evening Rickie Medlocke walked by & I asked if he wouldn't mind & he said 'How about one of me & Paul Samson?' & grabbed him & posed, top man.  Happy days! :)

Excellent! I'm surprised Ricky M even knew who Paul Samson was!  :o

Dunno where we were at that time? Definitely saw Blackfoot at Reading but it could have been a different year?
May have been the year that we buggered off one night and stayed at a nearby uncle's house for the friday or saturday night, and left you and Oz to rough it at the festival, then joined you again later the next morning. Serves us right I spose  ::) ;D

And I'd forgotten that Bernie Shaw was in Praying Mantis   :-[  Saw him (on the telly  ;) ) the other night with Uriah Heep at last years Download  :o

Samson supported Blackfoot on their UK tour in April '82.  I must admit to being a bit miffed at the time as I just wanted a pic of Medlocke but I'm over it now.

That was the only time Blackfoot did Reading.  We didn't rough it that year, got a B&B in town, not sure what you did.

Absolutely brilliant memories - thanks for uploading these. I'm sure I was at the '82 Hagar gig and one of the 5 Rush shows in '80, quite possibly one of the Odeon Blackfoot gigs too. Tygers photos reminded me of a great gig at Oxford in support of The Cage LP which I loved at the time.

Mark....there were some quite eclectic bills back then.....probably the way record companies worked......did you catch any of them.

One's that stuck out for me (If my memory serves me right) were:-

Marillion supported by Howard Jones

Angel Witch supported by Billy Bragg

They would have been at the Marquee, Wardour St.

Don't really remember anything too eclectic.  A few punk bands cropped up as ill-advised support slots to some bands &, of course, one can always trot out the old 'I saw Chas & Dave supporting Led Zeppelin' chestnut.  Other than that I don't recall too many.

Anyways...some more... :)

Ta.  Probably the most successful roll I took. 26 decent shots out of 36 is pretty darn good even if I do say so myself.  Of course it helps when you've got a seat down the front, a decent light show & a band with oodles of charisma. :)

I have 'puffier' photos of Phil coming up later.

Also from that era, when Thunder & Lightning came out, I remember them playing that title track live on Chris Tarrant's late nite show OTT and how blown away I was by the performance. In a small studio set, dressed to look like a pub, with John Sykes giving it large, they were f'in awesome  8)

He did get a bit too Very Metal in months/years to come tho, IMHO  :-\

EDIT - I heard Cold Sweat on the radio over the weekend, which reminded me that it was that track they played on OTT, not Thunder & Lightning. If anyones interested!  ;D

Only just looked at this thread, brings back some memories, UFO, Saxon, Pat Travers, but most of all Ted Nugent, saw him around then maybe a tad earlier not sure if it was at the Rainbow or Hammersmith, loudest gig i have ever been to! My memory tells me he left his guitar leaning squealing on an amp feeding back at one point and walked off causing considerable disquiet to a mother who was sat in front having obviously accompanied her young son. Also recall with Travers Aldridge dispensed with his sticks for the drum solo and used his hands. Those were the days somehow I never got to see Rush though which is a regret!

Your memory is pretty good, Ben.  I've certainly seen Ted leaving the guitar feeding back when he went off, would have been at Hammersmith as he never did the Rainbow. Ditto Aldridge playing with his hands.

That's ressuring, your series of Blackmore destroying his guitar is also familiar. I recall him doing that probably on the Down to Earth Tour, but think it was a feature of most Rainbow gigs?

Post by: rascal houdi on July 16, 2014, 01:17:44 am
That was the Down To Earth tour at Wembley Arena.  Blackmore was always a bit picky about doing encores and on the previous night had caused a mini-riot (well, a few seats broken) by not coming back on which probably forced his hand a bit on the 2nd night. That was the 3rd or 4th Rainbow gig I'd been to & the 1st one where he trashed the guitar.

Thanks for all the nice comments, folks, glad everyone enjoyed my little project.  I may well update the page in a couple of months with stuff from the digital era, might even put up some of my 'normal'(ish) photographs, but that's for later.  A few interesting things have come out of it....the Classic Rock website currently sports my photo of Saxon in a feature on the 1st Monsters of Rock in 1980, though quite why they picked that particular one I've no idea, and one of my shots of Mr. Coverdale will adorn Martin Popoff's new book due in November:

Brilliant.

Everyone takes photos nowadays at gigs, but the sheer quality of most of yours, given the eras they were taken, made them a joy to view.

Equally impressive was how you managed to consistently get such brilliant seats!

I do hope you get the time to put up some of your digital work.

Congrats on the publication of your pictures!

Somewhat sooner than expected we move into the digital era with some more band shots plus some normal & some not-so-normal photography.  Some of you will have seen the band shots posted elsewhere on here from a few years ago, quality will gradually improve as I get to grips with digital photography.

Great stuff Mark 8)  Those colours on the more 'abstract' shots are awesome! I try and take some of these type of shots - I have an eye for the image but the camera usually lets me down with the details and/or the colour definition. Well that's my excuse  ::)

Very good.  Would like to see them in a more established venue with a better light show, which consisted of 4 small trees of unchanging blue lights hence the not brilliant pics.  If ever a band deserves a pulsating, swirly psychedelic light show with back projections it's them but I guess they're not earning enough yet.  No complaints musically, quite hypnotic and very exciting once they got in their groove after a couple of numbers.

Nope, knew of him....

He was an "old school" street artist and there was a reported feud with Banksy some years back (over the tagging of an area under a bridge). There was a rumour that he was attacked by Banksy followers. I seem to remember he was in a coma for a while....

Still playing smaller venues because their recorded output isn't as good as it used to be...

Brilliant...always enjoy looking at these.  Particularly good because the security were on anyone in an instant that they spotted taking snaps.  Or at least they were in Newcastle.

No one really noticed tucked away a few rows back in the circle as we were.  May have been different downstairs.

Great photo's!

Are the street art photo's all shot in London? I recognise quite a few from my visit last year. I went to Spitalfields at the that visit. Are there other areas with a lot of street art?

Most are in London, yes. Camden Town, Shoreditch and Brick Lane (near Spitalfields) are the main areas. Quite a few were taken in Brighton and some from Lisbon on holiday last year.  If you click on an image and open it up it gives you the location.

Long time since last update.  Uploaded more street art and the odd gig over the last couple of months but, more interestingly I would guess (having scanned them at the time I started this original project but not used them as I didn't have the relevant photos to go with), I've just posted a wad of old concert tickets from my earliest gig-going days.

Should bring back some memories or induce envy, enjoy!

Loving the gig ticket scans, mate....

There must be loads of early ones missing ?

The first one I reckon we had in common was the Rush at Hammy in '79....although not sure which dates we went to  :-\

I wish I'd kept mine

Being my fist ever gig I thought it was brilliant at the time.  In retrospect it was probably nothing of the sort but it was a decent enough introduction to live rock music.
The crowd were getting on Bolin's back a bit during his solo which, to be fair wasn't great from what I remember, but his playing was good overall. Pleased I went, put it that way!

A fair few, yes.  I didn't bother with a lot of the old Hammersmith stamped-on-the-back ones, just used the more visually appealing ones.  Also there would have been a load where tickets didn't exist like the Marquee back then when there were no advanced tickets and you just got one of those little things that you used to get at the cinema.

Remember those cinema style tickets from the Marquee.....

Do you have a list ?

I'll see if I can get some jpegs done that can be easily read...

Mark - out of curiosity...is there anyone who is still on your bucket list?  Someone who you could have seen but never have?

Some dream gigs there, for me.  Most of them are dream gigs, actually.

With the internet, youtube, twitter, facebook, alot of the mystique and excitement has gone from the whole concert experience...to have seen some of these gigs at those stages must have been amazing.

A few that come to mind off the top of my head that I probably would have had the chance to see but didn't (and won't be able to now, obviously) for one reason or another would be Frank Zappa, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and Sensational Alex Harvey Band.  There must be others but can't think of them at the moment.  Of course there's bundles that were a bit before my time but that goes for everybody I guess.

Top of the bucket list but unlikely to happen as I'm guessing they're unlikely to extend the US tour to Europe is Temple of the Dog.

No, a Nikon bridge camera with a 63x zoom.  Much smaller and easier to lug around/sneak in than a DSLR.
