Title: Counterparts / COS sync listens, Saturday night
Post by: Slim on January 15, 2004, 01:23:10 am
Hi folks,

There will be two more 'sync listens' on Saturday night - this time the subject of our online deliberations and real-time commentary will be, first, Counterparts at 11:20pm, followed by Caress Of Steel commencing at 12:30.  All welcome.  Hopefully there'll be plenty of good-natured, open-minded discussion.

I'm really looking forward to this. Bought the CoS remaster at the weekend and have been saving it for Saturday night!  :)

I'll be there (probably)...

Counterparts will be a bit of a drag, but no doubt CoS will seem even better for the anticipation.  ;D ;D

I'm up for the counterparts sync listen. I'm working a 13 hour shift on Saturday so I'm not sure I'll be in any fit state to stay awake for COS.

As long as I survive Millwall v Sunderland I should be there for Counterparts at least.

Funny, Andy, I got the remastered COS on Saturday as well - heres hoping I can stay awake long enough  to listen to it ;)

Animate - nice early '90s alt-rock groove, great riff.
Title: Re: Counterparts / COS sync listens, Saturday nigh
Post by: Slim on January 18, 2004, 05:22:52 am
The drums are a bit noisy, aren't they?  The same crude pattern all the way through, mixed too high.  Still, a bit of spirit in the performance there, but it doesn't rescue poor old Animate.

Title: Re: Counterparts / COS sync listens, Saturday nigh
Post by: Dave Brenchley on January 18, 2004, 05:23:15 am
Animate - I mostly like this one. Great start with the drums and the sound was a real kick up the arse after Presto and RTB.

Perhaps a bit too long though and for some reason they always seemed to play it slower live - not good.

I like the middle section with the wierd backward guitar when we get there....

I hated this album when I first heard it, but now I've learned to like some of the songs. Animate has become my favourite song on this album.
Title: Re: Counterparts / COS sync listens, Saturday nigh
Post by: Analog RH on January 18, 2004, 05:25:27 am
Animate.

I will forever associate this song with Le Colisee, Quebec on t4e. For a portion of the gig I was in the first block, directly below the PA. This song sounded absolutely PHENOMENAL - like an aircraft taking off, but more beautiful.  :D

I think its a fab opener - like Dreamline its quite straightforward: a few chords, nice open guitar work over the chorus, a good groove and swagger.

Fave lyric - A man must learn to gently dominate. Good lad, NP.  ;D

Fave moment - NP's drum fill at 4.42 as they relaunch into the chorus after the bridge. Alex's sustained note over the top. Lovely.

Stick It Out

I like a little dirt under the finger nails, so the feedback emanating from Alex's Gallien-Kruger's really rings my bell.

I love this songs to death. Neil's laid back drumming and pounding of the bell on the ride cymbal is ace. It rocks, man. The backing vocals on the chorus are a bit dated, but then this album is now 10 years old.

Fave lyric - you might be too dizzy to do the right thing. Sounds like me after a few cheeky sherbets.

Key moment - every second of that snaking Lerxt riff. Qual. It. Ee.  ;D

Cut To The Chase.

Man, I'd forgotten how well this album starts - third gold nugget in a row.

Once again Neil is the bedrock here - there's a groove and swagger absent on the last two albums. It sounds fab (well done that Caveman). Alex's guitar is excellently chunky in the chorus. Love the brief use of organ.

Fantastic, fluid guitar solo.

Lyric - I'm old enough not to care too much about what you think of me. Which is a good job, considering how weird I am.

Moment - CUT> CUT> CUT> CUT TO THE CHASE! Nice.  8)

Shame its not all as good as this.

Nobody's Hero.

Hmmm. This sounds better than I remember. Lovely accoustic guitar. Nicely addictive drum rhythm through the solo (I'm air drumming along!). Goos pimple moment when the strings kick in (Michael Kamen RIP).

Another cracking solo from Baldmungous.

Ged's vocals are a bit uncomfortable during the verse, and the lyrics are a bit cringesome. Musically tho, thumbs up!

Thoroughly nasty Keef style pedestrian rifferama, and the chorus sounds like a Roxette b-side.

Between Sun and Moon.

Ah, the Counterparts sag-in-the-middle commences.

In the context of this album and 90s Rush, this song is pretty decent. In the context of Rush 1974 - present, this just doesn't cut the mustard.

There's no way the band would have put anything this average on any album during the Mercury / Phonogram years.

What nice to say?

I like Lerxt's solo. Its nice and dirty. Enhanced by Ged's booming bass and Neil keeping it simple.

Key lyric - reborn and baptized in a moment of grace. Peart and Dubois predict Slim's conversion to Presto.  ;D ;D ;D

Big Who influence on that intstrumental.

Not the first time they've ripped The Who off though, we'll come to that on the next album. ;)

I have to say I don't like it, but it's the best so far.  Lots of spirit in the chorus, some nice guitar twanging in the verses.

The production on this record is rather poor - the bass and drums sound a bit raw and crude.  Rupert Hine would have improved this record no end, whether he would have rescued it though, I can't say.
Title: Re: Counterparts / COS sync listens, Saturday nigh

Alien Shore.

Now things start to get ugly.

That ascending guitar motif in the chorus is Alex by numbers. You can tell when the band are out of ideas cos they dig this one out of the basement on several occasions during the 90s. (Lerxt uses it on Victor as well - 2nd track - wine making me forget song titles).

How shite are the lyrics - the chorus is absolute pants.

Wretched, but worse is around the next corner.

One saving grace - Lerxt's solo. Lovely tone.

The Speed of Love.

The bottom of the barrell. Right up there with Color of Right, Totem, Dog Shit, Carve Away The Shit, You Bet Your Life and I Think I'm Going Bald.

Double Agent.

Here we are! MUCH better!

Where would you rather be? Anywhere but here. Well, that's how I felt during Speed of Love.

This is a [glb]fantastic[/glb] song. Great gnarly riff, head nodding groove from The Professor, nice Ed McBain style spoken "chorus" from Ged. Nicely captured by KS again.

You can tell I like this - I've turned the volume back up!!

Key moment - 2.53 to 3.25, Alex opens up his playing and the keyboards sneak in to fill out the background. A fabulous 30 seconds. (I also love 3.50 to 3.55 - humbuckin').

Only downside - the parping keyboards toward the end. NO!

Ah yes, probably the CP track I'm most familiar with - the aptly titled Leave That Thing Alone, should have been renamed Leave This Thing Alone and made the title track.

There's nothing really wrong with this one, it's not in poor taste or amateurishly done like most of Corporatepants, it just doesn't do anything for me.  Pretty flat.  A nice bit of echoey guitar, that's about it.

Leave That Thing Alone.

Sounds great LOUD. Blew my head off in Toronto in '97, since then I've been particularly fond of it.

Wish I could play the guitar like Alex does in the "verses".

Great from 1.25 - reminds me of Deep Purple.   :o  . Then Alex's solo soars as if from Heaven. Analog manna!  :D

To my mind they have yet to write a crap instrumental. This, Limbo and Gangster of Boats are all fine.

GREAT opening. At the volume I'm listening to this - made me jump.  ;D

Sublime guitar in the verse. It may have a sheen, but its still Rush. If this song is corporate, Slim, give me more.  ;) :)

As for that chorus, phew-ee. NP "travels". Ged fires up his bass. Lerxt stands at the front of the stage and sways back and forth as he grinds the riff out.

Not his best solo, but the bass-free big riff re-entry to the chorus is FAB.

The last track at last - great:  Everyday Glory

Best thing I can say about this is it's the one that closes the album - and for Corporatepants, that's a very nice attribute indeed.

A very drab, banal, corporate semi-ballad of the kind that you'll hear better examples of several times an hour on Radio 2.

That's it then, convictions confirmed - every single track is one to skip.

Everyday Glory.

They save the best to last, the old feckers. Not often they do that these days.

This is just magnificent. It reminds me of U2 but in a good way - the bass is very Mullen-esque.

Beautifully produced - there's lots of room to breath in the sound, very widescreen.

Once again Neil is beautifully captured - the ride cymbal work drives me CRAZY its so good.

This song makes me want to learn to play the bass. This is a Geddy tour de force.

From 3.45 - the best bridge on the album, musically and lyrically (it stirs me!  :D ).

I don't want it to end, which is the biggest compliment I can give this song.

All in all, enjoyed most of that. Take out the three-way shite-fest in the middle and you've got a pretty decent album. Much better than I remembered.

Well, a half and half album. Some great songs and some absolute shite songs. I don't think there is another Rush album that is so black and white for me.

Made it.

I enjoyed discussing it with you chaps, but I didn't exactly enjoy the music on the whole, I have to say.

 :)

Everyday Glory - not the greatest album closer but definitely not the worst (that was on the album before).

It's been a while since I've listened to Counterparts all the way through and, with a couple of exceptions, it's still a damn good album in my opinion.

I enjoyed that. Back in 15 minutes.

Although I like Counterparts (at least most of it) I like Slim's slating of it almost as much.

Put one of your Pat Benatar albums on then

Perhaps I will. I'd rather listen to most of Pat's albums than the second side of CoS.
