Post by: Gandalf on July 15, 2008, 22:07:29 pm
24 - Series 3 Episode 3:
Tony Almeida walks down the stairs and mumbles to a colleague in CTU 'Call me....extension two one one two'  :D

(Shortly afterwards he lived to regret it.  Tony was shot in the neck in Episode 4  :-[)

They're still around, I see the coaches every now and then.

There's also a local landscaping company called GRACE that use a similar type face to the GUP artwork.

Just read this online.

Overpaying your mortgage by a tenner a month

When people suggest making overpayments to a mortgage, you probably assume they mean at least a couple of hundred extra a month.

But even just an extra tenner could make a substantial difference. For example, if you had a mortgage of £150,000 over 25 years and were paying a rate of 4%, you would pay £792 a month.

The total repaid over the 25 years would be £237,527. Pay an extra tenner into that mortgage each month and you'd own your house outright seven months sooner. You'd also save £2,112 in interest.

From John Nicholson's latest column on Football365 about the sacking of managers, particularly Andre Villas Boas.

" I have no doubt that Mr V-B is actually rather good but after Porto he just hasn't quite found the right group of players to respond to his special kind of wisdom. He's like a great guitarist playing in the wrong band; it's like putting Alex Lifeson in One Direction - a complex genius in amongst simpletons."

Funny analogy..not sure he was given enough time at either Chelsea or Spurs to prove whether it was a fair assessment though. Perhaps he will show with the next club? He will durely only choose a club where he has complete autonomy as manager though and that will limit his options at the more successful clubs.

Not obscure, but unexpected.
On NME.com they are listing great key changes in rock (!) Marathon is in there, and there are no snobby remarks either.

Hmmm, possibly...but in the right hands you sort of don't notice.  Def Leppard's Hysteria has a relentless plethora of them throughout and that album is a zillion-selling pop-rock classic.  I 've more of an issue with them being mis-used (for example being too obvious and lazy and cheesy), but my sugar-ears usually finds them irresistable.  And I like "spotting" not-so-obvious ones. :)

Was watching the first episode of  season 2 The Bridge (US version).. This bloke was wearing a Rush GuP t shirt... one character asked.. why do youl ike Rush are you Canadian or something.. the other guy answers back ..no just a fan.. then there's a bit of dialogue about 2112 and Hemispheres...fecking hell...

Daniel: Are you Canadian?
Sponsor: No. I'm just a fan.
Daniel: Do you like them when you're sober? I mean that's impressive. I mean ... 2112 is an okay album but ...
Sponsor: Hemispheres dude?!
Daniel: Hemispheres is like ... ok it's fine.
Sponsor: Ok. What is your system?
Daniel: Ready? 2 beers a day.
Sponsor: What about vodka?
Daniel: No. No - vodka leads to pills and pills are not good for Mr. Happy Pants. It's 2 beers a day. Gives me something to look forward to.
Sponsor: Yeah. 2 beers a day is not gonna work 'cuz you're an addict Daniel.
Daniel: I may be buzzed now but tomorrow I'll be sober and you sir, will still be a Rush fan. ...

Ouch! Suitably chided.
Of course, what I was insinuating is that no one in 1981 could possibly have predicted that Rush would be enjoying this level of success (or influence) some 35 years later - certainly not Claire Grogan or John Gordon Sinclair!
Cool/uncool? Vindicated and proud, definitely.

Very obscure, but in the middle of a short story called The Time Being by Ben Pedroche, broadcast on Radio 4 last Friday at 15.45, just as the protagonist climbs into his enormous imaginary sandwich, we are treated to the opening of Xanadu. Now I could be wrong, but there's a man who wrote a story purely to sneak Rush onto the radio.

Not a Rush reference but amusing and un-expected so thought I'd share  - was watching the 2 part programme on Christie's Auction House and this rich Arab Sheikh is sitting there and his paddle number for the auction is 666 - when asked if he chose it and if it had significance he said - yes I am a Heavy Rock Fan and like Iron Maiden so my number is 666 The Number of the Beast!!  ;D

So I'm deep in the middle of nowhere, Nachod, Czech Republic. Have to drive to Prague so go into a very small poundshop type of place to get a bottle of water at 8.30 am. I enter the store to the sound of Alex shredding the Working Man solo over their speakers.

I'm watching Warehouse 13 on Pick, and I'm sure the male agent just said something about Rush being the best band ever (well, that would go down well here), but then spoiled it by saying that Snakes and Arrows was the best album since Roll The Bones.

Actually, looking at the studio albums since Roll The Bones, that wasn't saying a lot really.

We had a legends darts night up our working men's club a couple of weeks ago, and 3 time world champion, John Part, who is a Canadian, was one of the players. I went to have a throw up with him on the practice board, and he noticed my 2112 t-shirt. He said "RUSH. Geddy Lee, Neil Peart, and who's the other one?". I told him it was Alex Lifeson, to which he replied, "Ah yes. It's like the Severn dwarves. You know their names, but sometimes you forget them." 😁.

Walked into the living room where I found the One Show was on the TV playing to an audience of 0. I was about to switch it off when I noticed a fat bearded bloke in a 2112 T-Shirt.

I'm guessing nobody else watched "Artist In residence", last night (Sunday29/7 on Channel 4).

It followed a portrait artist as he went behind the scenes at West Bromwich Albion last season. He'd never followed football, but due to spending almost all season with the managers, players and fans, he became a fan. It was an excellent documentary as it followed The baggies through a particularly traumatic season that ended with relegation from The Premier League.

The artist's name? Tai-Shan Schierenberg.

A bit tenuous is this one I suppose...

The new Chief Executive of North Ayrshire Council used to play creekit for the YYZ Cricket Club. Yes, named after the Rush instrumental from the Moving Pictures album. No mention of it is made in this article, but it is the truth, I used to be their occasional scorer. They only made occasional scores.

Very sad....

On a lighter note there was a police report from Warrington that was doing the rounds on Facebook earlier this week....

A picture of a police car next to a fallen tree with the following text :

"There is unrest in the forest, there is trouble with the trees.

Well, not quite, it's Woolston Grange Avenue. If you were one of the many people delayed by this tree fall, we thank you for your patience.

Tree now despatched by hatchet, axe and saw (by WBC). "

We were in a bar in Salou yesterday watching the football when I was on the way for a piss and walked past a Derby fan who was probably a bit older than me. I had my Power Windows shirt on, and as we passed he shouted 2112 and put his thumb up.
