Title: What games are you playing? Round 4
Post by: Chris Quartly on April 21, 2010, 18:16:20 pm
Enjoying Modern Warfare 2 on the PC when I get the chance, multi-player that is, anyone bothered with the single player?

Heh after at LEAST 38 people have left Infinity Ward (makers of COD) through disgust that Activision FIRED the 2 Bosses there, it's JUST been announced that makes of Halo, Bungie have just signed a 10 YEAR!!! deal with Activision, so it looks like they are making games for all platforms now, not just MS... Cool

On another note, I've been playing GTA4: Episodes from Liberty City on the PS3, very nice, a huge engine update since the original PS3 was released ;-)

Me! :P, not a huge multiplayer fan in general, currently doing the campaign on veteran.

Wrapping up sub-quests on Zelda: Twilight Princess here before taking on the final boss. Determined to hunt down all 60 Poe's this time around. Best i've ever done is 59. Currently at 41. Did the cave of trials in the Gerudo desert earlier. 50 increasingly difficult fights in rapid succession. Guaranteed sweaty palm experience. :)

60 Poe's!!!!!! Yes!!!!! Only took me like 3 attempts over four years. :)

Just finished Twilight Princess. WHAT a truly beautiful end to such a great game. Hopefully a new Zelda along in the not too distant future. <sighs> :)

Dived into Monster Hunter Tri on wii last night. Gorgeous game but there's a lot to take in in the controls. Steep learning curve. Possibly the best opening sequence and in game engine i've yet seen on Wii. Very fluid and high def looking.  Nintendo take note, this game has raised the bar on your console graphically. Next Zelda has to look AT LEAST this good. :)

Today I went all old school and have been playing Super Mario Bros Wii. Old school in the extreme but beautifully distilled platforming action.

I can't say how many hours I've lost to that game over the past year. I prefer it on iPod than desktop. Still my favourite pick-up-and-play-for-a-few-minutes-then-put-down-again games.

Red Dead on PS3.  Loving it.  I love the 'Wild West', and this is gritty and i think encapsulates the era really, really well.

The hours you can spend just riding about and taking it all in....

Awesome game - highly recommended

Stunning graphics, great sound. And a nice way of doing some of the GTA things we're used to, but in a WW setting. IE Hidden Packages... You now get to pick herbs :D

I've also been playing Alien Breed: Impact on PS3. This is the new Alien Breed game from those nice chaps at Team17... It's not out for a while yet (I think mid-late June) but so far I am enjoying it.

It is the SAME game, however there have been a good few changes. Also you will never see Ep2 and 3 on XBLA, they are all being renamed as self-containing episodes.

Red Dead Redemption seems to be THE GAME at the moment ??

Super Mario Galaxy 2. OMG. What a great game. I tried to have a "quick look" earlier. 3 hours suddenly vanished. Whoops. Basically it's Galaxy all over again but with some extra elements in the playability. So far I have discovered that you can tunnel through certain levels with a handy drill gadget and Yoshi is available to eat enemies and generally give the scenery a good tongue lassoing. It's a real smile inducing game with a lethal "oh just one more level" evil time destroying hook. Especially pleased as I picked it up for £4.99 as a tradein against Mario Kart (which I hardly ever played).

It's E3 time...

Microsoft:
Last night announced the 360 "Slimline" which goes on sale in North America, THIS week, and the UK on July 16th. What's different? well it's smaller, has a 250GB HDD, as well as built in wifi to 802.11n level. Price? Exactly the same as the current TOP 360.

They also announced "Kinect" their motion controller, it will be released during November worldwide. However they still have not announced a price for it, and reports are, it's a tad sluggish. From a development point of view, it's poor, you look 1/3 of the processor to it, and it REQUIRES 176MB of RAM for all games :(

Sony:
Their presser is tonight at 6PM BST, there are a number of SUPER secret announcements, one of which is their subscription based PSN service, which is EXTRA to what you currently get, and will cost around £47 a year, but will have lots of coolness in it. More than that I cannot say as of yet.

Nintendo:
Their's is also today, around 3pm BST. They will be unveiling the 3DS, which is a 3D capable DS... :-)

Oh Sony MAY have a new bit of hardware to announce ;-)

You can get both of these on a live video stream from www.gametrailers.com

A bit further into SMG2 now. Have unlocked the first of the "challenge" levels. Damn it's tough! Actually, the whole game is a tad more demanding than SMG1. I don't see me finishing this one anytime soon. The gameplay is so perfectly balanced on the edge of doable that it hurts. There's hidden stuff all over the place too for those who like to venture off the obvious path. :)

Baught Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 on the weekend for the 360, done the first one already on the PC but well worth playing again :).

E3 was fairly interesting this year, a bit too much emphasis on the 'casual' gamer for my liking mind, I may have to get Kinect and Kinectimals so my daughter can have a tiger ;D.

While searching in the Ubuntu software repositories for something work-related, a package called AssaultCube caught my eye, and I've played it a few times this last week. It's a violent first person shooter with a multiplayer mode, so you can knife, blow up and shoot random people on the Internet. And it's free! Certainly not state of the art - it works very nicely on my 4 year-old PC with integrated graphics - but very decent nonetheless, about the same standard as a PS2 game I guess. Very fast-paced and lots of fun.

Can anyone recommend any other free multiplayer games, not necessarily with a Linux version? A multiplayer combat flight sim would be nice, or a driving game.

Played some Lego Star Wars Original Trilogy on PS2 whilst on holiday. Terry's sister Yvette's kids were playing it and I joined in. A most amusing game. Pokes fun at the films brilliantly whilst still maintaining a weirdly authentic feel.

A quick shufti on play reveals this bargain. http://playcom.at/tnms?LID=21&DURL=http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/3387233/Lego-Star-Wars-The-Complete-Saga/Product.html

51 stars into SMG2 now. Got one the other night "The Hidden Star in the Sinking Stinking Bog". Fiendishly difficult. I'm actually getting concerned that this game might actually get too much for my 44yr old reactions. If it's pushing me at 51 what's it going to be like in the upper 90's and beyond to the finish?! I .. am ... intimidated.

Gave 2 a bash and they have sorted a lot of the (well, my) annoyances out, the main one being keeping plasmids and your weapon up at the same time. I found having to swap made combat clunky and if you hit the wrong button you generally paid for it!

Got the final gold star and the comet medal on the Grandmaster level in SMG2. Just the prankster green star to get and as is befitting the final star in the entire game (star no 242) is a complete bi-aaatch.You have to get the final star without taking a single hit from anything. It's entitled "One Perfect Run". I can see it taking me a while.

Metroid: Other M arrived yesterday. Very different to the last 3 outings for Samus Aran. This one mixes 2D run and shoot with isometric 3D and fps available at any time simply by pointing the wii controller at the screen. Makes for a satisfying blend of new and retro gameplay styles. The focus this time around is definitely more arcade action than exploration with a definite attempt to make a modern interpretation of the original 2D platform Metroid games.

Finished Metroid Other M and a very enjoyable romp it was. Only criticism is it was a little too short compared to the last three outings for Ms Aran. My finish percentage was 97%. I had located the remaining 3 pickups but unfortunately I triggered the end sequence before I had a chance to collect them. I'll get them the next time around though. :)

As a CrapBox owner this is faintly disappointing - but I'll be getting PS3'd next spring (or sooner) anyway. :)

So Stew - all this is starting to get a bit controversial on geek sites & forums, so in the comparative safety of TNMS, is it really a technical issue, or do you just want to keep your hands clean? ;D

There IS a tech issue, MS have told us that there is a 2GB limit we have to adhere to, however there is more to this story than just the 2GB limit.

MS third party publishing have denied us release, so we are dealing with the First Party dept now, I've just finished all the paperwork.

1st Party WANT it, however it's not up to one person, it has to go to a committee for them to decide, so now we wait.

Fallout: New Vagas and Enslaved :)
Two games I'm really  looking forward to getting around to - I've presently developed something of a backlog to clear! Enslaved looks gorgeous and I love the idea of using the Journey To The West/Monkey storyline. New Vegas will probably wait until I've played through FO3 again (going to try being a bastard this time) and all the GOTY content.

Currently wasting lots & lots of time in Red Dead Redemption, mostly killing wolves, it would seem. I'll probably be here a while.

Red Dead is fantastic, and so far I've managed to complete the story missions, and the bulk of the non-multiplayer trophies, so doing pretty good. I'm peeved that I have to do those though to get a Platinum, despite HATING multiplayer :(

Both excellent:D

New Vagas is very similar to FO3 (same graphics engine/interface etc), the storyline doesn't seem as engrossing but there are some subtle gameplay changes which alter things for the better and it has tons of content as you would expect. Just getting my teeth in to it having put 200+ hours in to FO3 :P. Be prepared to live with the same bugs that plagued the first one mind!

Enjoying Enslaved, I find the camara gets bloody annoying at times but it is more than made up for. The vibrancy of the environments makes a really nice change frm the majority of games lately :).

I'd better knuckle down then! Finish Red Dead, then Assassin's Creed 2, Prince Of Persia reboot, GTA Episodes, FO3 2nd playthrough + GOTY content... do I have to work as well?  Curse these cheap games!

Oh well - I expect New Vegas & Enslaved will be £10 each by the time I get around to them... ;D

Ok so picked up Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Hmmmmmm

I finished it in 6hrs. Incredibly short compared to the first, however the game engine is MILES better, a far better experience from a tech point of view, however that gameplay length is appalling.

I've completed it with both endings (by only having to replay the last level), but I've noticed there are 10 movies still to unlock, so I suspect there's a fair bit of DLC to come.

As for Rock Band 3, I cannot find it anywhere up here in this deepest darkest  shithole called Yorkshire :( not a happy bunny!

Finished the story in Red Dead yesterday - that ending:  :'(  &  8) ! Absolutely love this game, GOTY for me by several hundred light-years, and that aforementioned end was the single most emotionally affecting videogame moment ever for me.

Not a whole lot left to do but I can see me putting this game back on a lot just to visit, to wander around and watch the world going about its business of being gorgeous. Never before played a game that was quite so much like being on holiday. Although my holidays don't ordinarily involve slaughtering 500+ wolves...

Anyway, Deadly Premonition (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/deadly-premonition-review) next - hoping this will be a little like revisiting the old days of RE1 & Silent Hill. ;D

Just finished the campaign on black ops, as Stew says it is only 7 hours but what a 7 hours! A marked improvement from the MW2 campaign :)

As a sidenote, I have just gone back over a few missions on recruit difficulty (completed on hardened but have a few trophies to grab) and it's a bloody farce! I know the easy modes are there for people who suck but I think my 2yr old could do it :P

Just finished the main story of this - certainly one of the oddest & most memorable games I've played, in a whole lot of different ways. Gameplay-wise it much of it really was a lot like the old PS1-era survival horror stuff - by which I mean clunky & unrefined, with rather too much reliance on dodgy & repetitive boss-battles towards the end, and far too many
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
. However the story, characters, voice-acting & the exploration & side-quest parts of the game were excellent, very evocative & thoroughly enjoyable. On the whole it was great, really took me back 10 years or so to the Dreamcast era in a lot of ways. I'd recommend this to anybody who has a 360 and is getting a little bored with generic shooty American soldier games.

Liberty City Stories next, I think. Or maybe Red Dead Undead Nightmare... 8)

I'm now playing through Goldeneye again on Classic 007 difficulty (hardest). Much greater use of stealth takedowns required. Firefights tend to end up with you dead without great care being taken in terms of cover and accuracy and you really have to track down those vital body armour jackets. Currently trying to get to the plane at the terrorist arms fair whilst everything is blowing up around me. Heart pumping stuff. The covering Natalya whilst she disables the Goldeneye level is going to be a total nightmare on this difficulty setting (if I can even get that far!) :)

On a side note, our next game is released on Monday, and we've NOT quite finished it yet.

We've also ported "Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath" to PC, and it's out Monday in what we are calling the "Oddboxx" which is all 4 Oddworld games to date for the nice price of £19.99 via Steam and other online retailers :)

I've finally got round to playing Bad Company 2 on the PC, and now wish I'd done it sooner. Trouble was, having loved the first 2 Battlefield games I became totally dsillusioned with military shooters after playing Modern Warfare 2 on PC last year. I got completely sick of all of the wallhacks, aimbots, and general smacktardedness that comes with not having an FPS game hosted on pure-server.

On the bright side, it made me jump back into Team Fortress 2 and Left4Dead in a big way.

BC2 shows how it can and should be done, IMHO. I'd never though I'd enjoy a return to bullet-drop so much....

I suggest you play them in order, and here's why ...

1. The story is a continuation, so to do it in order means things make sense.
2. Across the 3 released so far the gameplay has become more and more polished to the point that it is BLISS in the latest AC:B title. Having decided to play AC1 again for a crack it's not great :( from a gameplay POV.

About 3 levels to go before the final boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns. This game is harder than diamond and about as forgiving of errors as Darth Vader. Of course, it's not over once I beat the last boss. Oh no, that would be too easy. Then I have to get all the K O N G letters in every level in each of the 8 worlds in order to unlock the super hard challenge levels. One per world. Really nice the way the designers have built this game so that you can rattle through the early stages if you are a casual gamer, complete the quest only if you have mega patience and steely co-ordination and finally the bonus levels are revealed only to the hard core completists. I approve! :)

Finished Metroid Prime on hard mode. Final boss fight was not as hard as I thought it would be. Now playing through Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. It'll be a double play through too as my original save files have disappeared so I can't start on hard mode.

I am delighted to say I have started playing MechCommander : Gold having found the CD which I thought I'd lost.

Hoorah!   This is a corking little game from 1999, and the Gold pack features the original MechCommander games, plus the Desperate Measures expansion pack along with some game engine tweaks like waypoints, srtillery strike hotkeys, and more advance unit grouping.

The voices of the Mech pilots are a bit annoying sometimes, but I love the sounds of the missiles as they fly, and also the Mechs knocking down small trees.

If it means anything to anyone, "Ejecting, ejecting, EJECTING!!!".

There is a cool intro video to this game, and the background music and Mech noises etc., make for quite a nice atmosphere.

A game I was never that good at, to be completely blunt, but which I loved to play.

Eldin Volcano. 5/6 key parts located. Bomb lobbing/rolling very well implemented and most satisfying and the dowsing feature adds a clever twist to searching. Often when you dowse you'll get the direction indication pointing straight at a major geographic obstacle so you have to plan an approach to the other side using the map. Quite easy to get turned around or distracted by unexplored paths unless you keep your objective focus sharp.

Just been playing Issac's new XBox games.
FIFA 12 is brilliant, and I've just bought LA Noire for me, it was only £5.

I'm not a gamer, but the XBox has proved to me that the Wii really is a kids console, not that there's anything wrong with that, Mario Kart is still a magnificent game, but I am seeing how adults can get suckered in to the whole experience.

Typical misconception that. Games like the Metroid, Zelda and Mario Galaxy series show that there is some serious hardcore gaming to be had on wii. Just because something looks initially "cute" do not underestimate the depth of the gameplay experience. :) If your idea of adult gaming consists of characters swearing at each other and generally behaving like louts then yes, you will find much more adult themed gaming on Xbox and PS3. It is true however that Nintendo have always leaned towards the family communal gaming angle as their preferred niche and this does not endear them to core gamers. Titles like Zumba this and Dance that also make me want to be sick when I see what they do. Basically further the Cowell world view conditioning and general brainwashing of youth. Bleeucch!

Not at all. I am trying to say that the XBox is a more powerful machine, so allows for a more sophisticated game to be played, and by that I don't mean adult content.
I have no problem with the Wii, and have enjoyed many hours playing games, but the XBox has impressed me greatly, as the Wii did when I first played it.
Like I said, I'm not a gameplayer, I have just been impressed with what I have seen so far.
Didn't mean to offend any Nintendoites out there.
Title: Re: What games are you playing? Round 4
Post by: Captain Ron on December 28, 2011, 01:45:37 am
No offence taken JonL. I was just merely saying that raw processing power is not the be all and end all when it comes to sophistication of gameplay. I can remember when I first got my PS3 marvelling at the lush graphics compared to my humble wii and all things being equal the PS3 is certainly capable of a richer graphic and sonic delivery. However, it strikes me that the game playing sophistication is often far from equal. I can particularly remember getting the PS3 version of Prince of Persia at the same time as I was playing Twilight Princess on wii. Thematically they are quite similar but the gameplay depth on TP is far greater than PoP even though the latter looks stunning. The quality of the developer is far more important than the hardware in my experience.
Title: Re: What games are you playing? Round 4
Post by: JonL on December 28, 2011, 01:56:58 am
Well, from my limited experience, I can safely say that the Wii was something I played with my son, I bought a couple of titles for me, but never played them. I bought LA Noire for the XBox and it has blown me away, but then thematically it's right up my street too. I'l see how long I last though.
We had a FIFA title on the Wii and rarely played it. We both love Fifa 12 on the eggbox.

Ron, just because you don't like something doesn't make it sh!t.  I'm no fan of Zumba but my wife absolutely loves it; she has the WII version and goes to classes most weeks.  She comes home on such a high after a class and although its not my cup of tea I can appreciate that she enjoys it.  The situation is reversed with Rush, of course  ;)

Oooh. Just saw some lush stuff on YouTube for the forthcoming Wii U. Very excited about Pikmin 3. Loved the first 2 back on the gamecube. The re-released wiicontrol versions for wii were a total disaster. Wrecked the control system completely and crucially removed the ability to do a rapid fire swarm attack which was an essential tactical ability. I actually got my purchase of that refunded as I argued it was broken and even complained directly to Nintendo and got an admission that they felt that particular aspect of the controls was not required to play the game! Pah! It was broken. I notice in the video that they've got a swarm attack feature re-implemented. :)

Suddenly realised that I am in no hurry to buy the new Wii U much as I want one to replace my severly creaking wii. The release titles are completely underwhelming. Think i'll let the hardcore Nintendo fanbois take the heat of launch prices and then i'll pick mine up in the new year when the price inevitably plummets.

Nano Assault Neo on WiiU (fabulous little download shooter with more than a tip of the hat to Super Stardust on PS3) and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (hero quest mode) on WiiU embedded Wii.

Lego Lord of The Rings. Hilarious and really good fun. Dangerously compelling for obsessive completist types though. Also got presented with a beautiful collectors edition Metroid Trilogy disc by my good lady that she got off ebay for me. The WiiU I recently purchased is not backwardly compatable with the gamecube so getting this means I can revisit the joys of Metroids Prime and Echoes updated with the same control system developed for Corruption. Had a quick look at Prime and two things struck me. 1) The control system reworking is genius and 2) the proper widescreen aspect adjustment and general fluidity is noticeably smoother than the original version. On the downside, some of the graphics do look dated compared to a modern fps type game but the gameplay is what it was all about anyway so this is no biggy. :)

Just getting to the end of MP: Corruption now. It's been a great trip revisiting this series. Playing them back to back it was interesting to see the technological and idea leaps between each iteration. Corruption is by far the best of the three from an ideas and implementation point of view. Would absolutely kill for an HD Metroid Prime style game making full use of the WiiU. Rumours abound that Retro Studios are working on this but I take those rumours with a pinch of salt.

What games do you think are missing from the system?
Title: Re: What games are you playing? Round 4

I'll be honest Stewart I think the WiiU release has been pretty dire. I needed to replace my Wii as it was dying so the WiiU was bought primarily as a Wii replacement and 90% of the time it is on it is being used as a Wii. The machine itself is very nice but what I would consider the flagship Nintendo franchises are MIA. I currently play exactly zero WiiU specific discs. I have downloaded the excellent Nano Assault NEO which is a sandbox shooter in a similar sort of vein to Super StardustHD on PS3 and it shows off the potential of the machine sound and graphics wise very well.

Nintendo need to light a fire under their collective asses and get new games in the flagship Nintendo specific franchises out. I'm thinking Zelda, Metroid, Pikmin, Mario 3D with a nice lick of HD paint and in no particular release order. The first of these to hit will be Pikmin 3 in a couple of months but it's chronically late. Nintendo themselves have admitted that this should've been ready on release day. None of the ports interest me as I can already play them on my PS3. Of the WiiU specific releases so far, ZombiU looks fairly decent but i've had my fill of survival horror type games so it's not really appealing to me.

In short, much like Apple I think Nintendo is currently "dropping the ball" primarily due to this lack of AAA Nintendo specific franchise releases. I am not surprised when I see WiiU's in the window of Cash Converters, CEX or similar.

Title: Re: What games are you playing? Round 4
Post by: Captain Ron on April 10, 2013, 17:56:56 pm
That's where I picked up Nano Assault NEO. :) The prices on there for downloads of games that you can also buy on disk are an absolute joke though. Something like £54 for ZombiU  :o If I wanted it I would pick it up for less than half of that pre-owned at any of my local game stockists.

There is a problem with EU legislation there...

If you sell a product at RETAIL and have an advertised RRP, then by law you have to use that price everywhere. This also affects Sony and MS too.

So would you pay £20 for an awesome game on the e-Shop?
Title: Re: What games are you playing? Round 4
Post by: Captain Ron on April 10, 2013, 18:18:39 pm
Well that would be a total no-brainer as AAA titles are normally £40 or more at release on disk. Your suggested price point is good as there is no resale value in a download.

If games companies start releasing their AAA titles as downloads at a fraction of the price of a full disc based release then this would certainly be a serious blow to the viability of the second hand game market. The cynic in me says that this could be done short term to kill competition from those channels and then when we are all used to buying via download the games companies could increase their prices again. I shall be following developments closely.

A bit old hat now, but I picked up Crysis for PC with both of its expansion packs for less than a tenner, so that should keep me entertained for a few weeks as I didn't bother with it back when it was cutting-edge stuff.

I've still got to get through the remakes of Ico and Shadow of the Collosus on PS3 at some point too. I'm definitely in retro-gaming land at the moment.

Having not played Pikmin in several years revisiting it in "New Play Control" (controls modified for Wiimote and nunchuk) guise has been a very pleasant surprise. I had forgotten how deep the strategy element can get in this little game. You can play it simple and direct or you can try and optimise each game day to do as much as possible. I remember getting it down to about 12 days (out of a possible 30) and thinking I was quite smart. I have since found videos on YouTube of people completing the entire game in 6 game days. My flabber was well and truly gasted.

Really looking forward to the Nintendo announcements due tomorrow. Everything crossed for a big Samus HD shaped reveal from Retro Studios. :)

Spotted that in the Nintendo E3 announcement. "Oddworld Inhabitants" lol.

Have to say I was a bit underwhelmed by the Nintendo lineup. The new Mario looks awfully similar to the 3DS Mario 3D. Definitely not what I was hoping for from a Galaxy 1 and 2 sequel. No mention of a properly new Zelda although I do admit the Windwaker HD looks lovely. New Donkey Kong Country looks great but surely Retro can't have been working on this for 2 years?! I was hoping for a new Metroid. :/

Monolith's "X" looks suitably epic. I'll probably give that a go. Wonderful 101 looks interesting too. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Brothers look good if you like that sort of thing but not really my cuppa.

None of these look as cool as Pikmn 3 though and that already has been announced.

In short I am still not convinced that Nintendo are not still fumbling the ball a bit.

Pikmin 1 "PLay Control" version on Wii. Forgot how utterly brilliant this game was. You can play it simple and surface or you can go deeply tactical. The genius of Shigeru Myamoto never fails to amaze me.
Title: Re: What games are you playing? Round 4
Post by: Captain Ron on June 17, 2013, 11:13:39 am
Finished my first Pikmin 1 run in 20 game days. Not bad for not playing it in 10 years. Think the fastest I ever managed it was 14 days. Some obsessive has worked out how to do it in 6 which is basically one visit to each area of the game and fetching all of the parts there which is frankly incredible.

The new Play Control method is usable and for some things is superior to the old joypad but when it comes to rapid fire swarm attacks, the co-ordination required is tricky compared to the old joypad. I am glad to see they have re-instated pro-joypad control as an option for the upcoming Pikmin 3.

Just saw a trailer for Sonic: Lost World on WiiU and it makes sense now why Nintendo have not released a Mario Galaxy style game at this point. This looks like it will fill that gap very nicely indeed. :) Reminds me of when Banjo-Kazooie came out on N64 way back, took the 3D Mario 64 concept and ran with it to create something similar but with a refreshing and arguably more polished identity of it's own.

Currently about 2/3 way through Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands on PS3.

Yes, I got me a 2nd hand PS3 last Friday after discovering that some of my favourite PS2 games have been remastered in high definition - namely the Prince of Persia Trilogy, Tomb Raider trilogy and Devli May Cry trilogy.  Yippee!

And it still plays my PS1 Crash Bandicoot!  Won't play PS2 games though.

Sorry, I'm digressing.

I will be getting a PS4 at some point but I don't ever see myself shelling out £60 for a game. £40 is around my top line with £50 in exceptional circumstances for some mad limited edition with loads of extras. I can see all my PS4 disc purchases being second hand. Let early adopters take the hit.

Currently playing Super Mario 3D World on WiiU. Initially I thought it was just a bigger rehash of 3D Land on 3DS but as I went along I realised it is much deeper in the gameplay department. The constant variety of the gameplay levels is a joy. When I defeated poor old Bowser ( yet again ) the game unlocked what I thought was the bonus levels. Oh no. You're only about half way through the game at that point. When you do earn the ridiculously hard levels you discover there appears to be 9 final challenges but after battling through those you get awarded a futher 20 or so ultra-hard levels.

Games like this really appeal to the obsessive completist in me. I will not consider the game finished until I have every star and sticker (usually 3 plus a sticker per level) and have grabbed the Gold finish flag (as Mario) on every single level in the game. I can comfortably say despite my initial scepticism that 3D World is worthy to stand proudly alongside Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 in the pantheon of truly great Mario games.

On the very last level of Mario 3D World. It's called "The Champion Road" but really it should be called "The <insert string of swear words>er Road". Quite simply the most difficult thing in gaming i've encountered in 20 years. Maddeningly difficult and yet still feels tantaliisingly possible. It will not defeat me!!

I made a major breakthrough on a section I was having serious difficulty with for a couple of weeks so the end should be in sight soon. Definitely think i'll have to video doing the last level once i've cracked it. :)

No PS4 yet Stewart. I will undoubtedly get one at some point but tbh I am just having a lot of fun with the wiiu at the moment. I started playing Bayonetta the other night and it's quite stunning. Exceptional quality port from the 360 version. I've heard the PS3 version was not very well executed.

New Zelda WiiU game footage. Epona has had a brain put in and now doesn't allow you to crash her into trees. I always found that aspect of her behaviour a little weird but endearing. You really did have to steer that dumbass horse. No doubt she will still turn up when you call her in under 5 seconds no matter where you are in the world. :)
I really like the way they've put the world map on the controller and let you mark a point you can see in the distance and then check it on the map to see what route you want to take. Very nice. Good to see the sailcloth back too. A very handy piece of kit. The jump and freeze time to aim feature looks cool too. Death from above!

Yeah the PS3 version was pish! there was no reason for it to be pish, but it was, just poor abilities let it down.

Not out yet but quite like the look of the forthcoming Xenoblade Chronicles X for WiiU. Looks like a mashup of Final Fantasy / Dragon Age / Legend of Zelda.

Finished Metroid Prime and now working my way through Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Time has not dulled the excellence of these games. Oh for a WiiU Metroid release! I'm hopeful for an announcement at E3.

On the final boss fight in Metroid Prime:Corruption (veteran difficulty). It's a titanic ending worthy of the Prime trilogy. Almost did it last night but was killed in the final push.

More Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze here. Beat the end of game boss (many attempts required) but in a similar vein to a good Mario 3D game that's only about two thirds of the game completed. A "mystical item" is revealed when you defeat the final boss and an announcement that collecting six of these will unlock something else. So now, I am re-doing the incomplete levels ensuring that I have collected every puzzle piece and K-O-N-G letter on each level. Finest gaming OCD. :)

Very much so Stewart. Loved the first two Banjo Kazooee games. They felt like even more polished versions of Mario 64 to me. I keep hoping they will turn up one day on the WiiU eShop.

Got given Star Wars Battlefront for Christmas, and although it is very limited in what it has to offer it's entertaining enough.

I'm going to plug it again......

I used to love golf games on the Megadrive/ps1/2/3 etc etc

If you have a PS4 and like golf games, buy 'The Golf Club'.  I think I've played this on average around three times a week since Oct 2014

I used to be a huge gamer.  Not so much anymore, but this is the game I have played the most in my life over a constant period of time....and I include Manic Minor in that.

So... Like golf? Buy it

Paddy Power's "Hit The Spot" game; basically you have ten attempts per day to take 10 free kicks hoping to hit targets of differing value in the goal and achieve 30 points or more, which entitles you to "a share of €1,000".  After weeks of trying, with several near misses, on my 10th and last go today, I finally attained 32 points.  Yet to find out what my prize is - I'm expecting probably a fiver, if that.

UPDATE: won €1.58    ;D

I've just completed Song of the Deep. Difficult in parts, but very rewarding.

As it is a 'Metroidvania' type game, of course I've now got to go back and get all the secrets. Luckily the map itself shows you where the treasure and items are - but you have to work out how to get to the locations and access the treasure and items.

Most addictive game I have played in a long time. If you like Castlevania type games, I think you will like this.

Ah that it ain't. I still dig out Pinball Dreams (and Fantasies come to that) on the Amiga Forever platform now and then.

Zaccaria is fantastic though - and has one of my most fondly remembered tables from Uni (and that was sooooo long ago!), namely Nautilus.

If only I could find KISS. That was the one I played most.

I'm really enjoying this. I'm struggling a bit with battles in space but getting better at it, and weapons choice definitely makes a difference. A definite bargain at £17.50. There is a campaign and story to follow, but also you can do your own thing exploring, and/or take side missions. Early days yet, but initial impressions are very favourable.

And it looks gorgeous too. Also, despite playing for over an hour at a time, I haven't encountered the dreaded travel sickness I normally get when playing 3D games like this. Ho hum.

Hmm.... the title track "Into The Wonderful" is missing, replaced by "Heaven To Hades". Some kind of licencing issue perhaps?

The save system is different - no need for passwords like in the Amiga original.

Apart from that, it plays pretty much the same - although, having just loaded up Gods the original on Amiga Forever 8 Plus (v8.3) to compare, I can confirm that the XBO remastered version is SLOWER. As in everything just moves more slowly. Also, and sometimes leading to deaths that aren't really your fault, getting onto ladders to go up and down is more tricky on the XBO version.

There are some small tweaks in the control system to take advantage of the XBO controller layout.

It looks nice, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price.

If only "they" would do a proper remastered version (but faithful to the original) of . . . .

Chaos Engine

Ah - such fond memories of 2 player co-op working our way through that.

Until then, there is always Amiga Forever whenever I need a proper bit of nostalgia.
