Title: Summer hols - where are you going?
Post by: Norwegian on June 08, 2009, 19:21:48 pm
So, have you got anything booked for the summer hols?

We have rented a nice house in Spain (Alicante-area) for 2 weeks in July. Close to the beach, but we also have a private pool :)

Might also go on a trip to Ireland (Dublin most likely) later in July (3-5 days without children)

Will also go to my mountain-cottage for a week, and I am also booked in for 5 days in Marbella in september 8)

Just got ack from 4 days at Butlins, Skegness.  90 degress C and wall-to-wall sunshine!  ;)  Kids loved it and i managed to see the England game so it wasn't too bad.  In reality it was about 12 degrees and cloudy, Sunday it absolutely pissed it down.

Hopefully an extended business trip to Curaçao at the end of this month and a 3+ week trip to Andalusia in September. One week of travelling to Paradores and then two weeks in rented houses in the mountain areas.

We did skiing this year which cost a packet and a week's leave, and are therefore doing a variety of long weekends in the summer. I'm off to ireland next week cycling. We have the Hyde park London weekender and the Cornbury festival; 2 weeks off in August with the kids: camping booked as is friends in Bracknell for the likes of Legoland and then into London for a few days. Aug Bank Holiday long weekend in Scotland and various other outdoorsy weekends. Still a couple of days leave left and these may well go on doing a couple of the Tragically Hip Euro dates in November. Oh, and we'll likely be moving house.

2 weeks in August at my sisters place in Lanzarote, me, Lou and Luke as Sam is staying home to wreck look after the house. Then possibly a weekend with Lou and one of the teachers here doing some battlefields research around Ypres later the same month. Also hoping to get to Malta in October as well

Nowt for me. Due to job uncertainty and skintness its not practical this year. Also its real fecking expensive taking 5 kids on holiday.... and tbh taking 5 kids away isn't a holiday really eh?  ;) ;D

I have the last two weeks of August booked off with the children. Probably day trips and water fights in the garden. Looking forward to it and dreading it in equal measure.  ;D

Cornwall was great - first time I'd been there and it really is a beautiful part of the country. It's like a different world, full of picturesque little harbours and inlets. Found the locals really friendly and welcoming, as well. Stayed at an apartment at Mylor Yacht Harbour, a minute's walk from the water.

The only bummer was that the apartment didn't have WiFi, or a mobile broadband signal. Didn't have mobile phone coverage either, although I was grateful for that, as the mother-in-law is now decidedly barking, poor soul.

A week on the beach (in the Vendee) and then 2 weeks at my grans house in Tourraine.
Much local plonk will be drunk.

Patrick

Sounds hell. ;)

I really miss the Tourraine area having spent 7 summer holidays there just outside Chinon.

Have a great time Patrick

If so, I might be mistaken. ;)

I'm off to the island of Great Cumbrae next week - singing in the cathedral of the Isles. Much beer will be imbibed.  ;D

I do this from time to time (sing in weird places)to keep up with friends and see my godson (who met Michael Vaughan this morning on a cricket course, I learnt). Driving up to Knaresborough on Sunday and then getting a lift from there on Monday.  :)

bet the weather will be sh!t!

Then back for a week to enjoy my new bathroom and go to U2!!  ;D
then down to Plymouth where it will also rain

then Southwold

Ah The Great Cumbrae, a.k.a Millport.

Spent more summer holidays there as a kid, than I care to remember.

The George Hotel is a great place for a beer, and you must jump off Crocodile Rock.

We went there about six years on the trot as kids - after we had exhausted the delights of Frinton -on -Sea for 8 or so years!
I love (d) the smell of the brewery in the morning.
It's much busier these days, but still great - we swim round the pier, every year.  ;D

Just got back from Scotland - Cumbrae wasa bit run down and if we hadn't been singing, wouldn't have stayed! Still, we had reasonable weather, beer and I spent a lot of time with my godson  ;D

Arran on the other hand was beautiful -spent a long day there on Friday and am definitely going back - lots of walking/sailing/golf/beaches/cycling/distillery(I bought two bottles of Arran single malt a 10 & a 12 yr old)/brewery/NT property and grounds - something for everyone - and it was stunning.

a good half term hol/Easter break I reckon  ;D

We must have been near you then! I got some lovely sunset pics of Arran from the ferrry on the way back.

Dad is up on Wed so we'll crack open the single malt then - and he gets a bottle as a pressie too, for all the DIY he'll be doing.

I've been to Arran a few times. Did you do the tour of the distillery or just visit the shop ? I love whisky distillery tours. When I was there I seem to remember that one had some dreadful video before the tour featuring every cliché about whisky making. Lots of bollocks about the land and the sea and the weather. After that it was OK though.

cheese shop - yes - got some smoked cheddar and oatcakes  :)
Arran aromatics -yes - got some girlie stuff for my new bathroom
chocolate shop -no  :( - we drove past it but didn't make it. Another time...
I did drink some Arran Blonde beer but didn't buy any to take home as I also bought a new purse to replace the one that was nicked in London  in a lovely leather craft shop and spent a fortune in the distillery.
I also got my godson and his siblings pressies - so my cheap holiday in the UK wasn't so cheap...
...but I am in love with the isle of Arran...

We spent a fortune in Nardinis in Largs too... ;D

Just went to the shop as we had  two kids in tow, so it was a quick taste in the shop and then spend, spend, spend...will do the tour when I go back...

I went on a gin distillery tour in Plymouth last year, which was fun...

We made it to the grounds of Brodick Castle (house was shut) and the kids played in the adventure playground and ran around. We also managed one cairn/standing stones visit and a paddle on a beach. Godson played golf too!
We packed a lot in!
I should get commisssion from the Arran tourist industry for this...

We're considering going backpacking with the whole family to the UK in the summer of 2010 or 2011, perhaps also including a ferry ride to Dublin. I'd like to see a Liverpool game at Anfield (although I must say that if they keep playing like they do now, I'm not sure I want to after all...), and my wife would like to go to a few Jane Austen "locations" e.g. Lyme Park in Cheshire.

Any tips? We would probably be flying to Manchester, but is it better to rent a car or to use public transportations? Our budget is probably waaay too small, so expensive accomodation is out of the question. B&B would probably be the only sensible choice, at least most nights.

Some good value B&B's on the Wirral Gary, let me know timings and I'll price some up for you.  For info, a single flight from Liverpool to Dublin is currently £14 for an adult.

If you are coming to Liverpool I think it would be much cheaper/quicker/convenient to fly to Dublin from here, have done it myself a few times. Maybe you could consider Cork instead, I think Dublin is over-rated.

For Jane Austen locations, then the Derbyshire Peak District (http://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/be-inspired/film-tourism.aspx) is the place. Easily reachable from Manchester, and just a stone's throw from my front garden. If Mrs Grapers likes stuff like Jane Eyre too there is lots of Jane Eyre related stuff there too.

Neil, Kate and Nick, thanks for all your tips, we definitely might consider flying to Ireland instead of taking the ferry then. Kate, I've been to Dublin before, but my wife hasn't, that's the main reason I went for Dublin. But nothing's decided yet, we are still very much open for suggestions. I haven't been to Cork, so that would of course be something new for me as well.

The main reason why I considered the ferry is that I've worked for two ferry companies here in Finland, so I'd be interested to see as an adult how the ferry traffic between Ireland and the UK works. We haven't decided anything yet, so there will probably still be loads of changes to our plans before we decide on anything.

I think the value B&Bs on the Wirral might be a very good option for us, so Neil, I'd be happy to give you more info about timings as soon as we make up our minds. I'm not sure exactly when we would be doing this trip yet, but probably in July, and probably the second half of it. Like I said, we haven't even decided if we'll go this year or next year.

And Nick, sometimes I wonder if you know my wife... ;) She loves the BBC adaptation of Jane Eyre from 2006. I'll add your link to bookmarks so we can compare it with the "Republic of Pemberley" (http://www.pemberley.com/jasites/jasites.html) site that we've already browsed through :)

You wont see Liverpool FC in July Gary but maybe August. For what it's worth, it you make it August this year or next, there's a good possibility you can stay in my house whilst we're away, not a problem and wont cost a penny... just be careful with the hifi!! ;)

A week on the Almalfi Coast with the missus to visit our daughter in the first week of August

Sounds stonking, very jealous.

Nowhere for us,tied up in the house purchase we left it too late to book anywhere decent but can't complain, up here there are so many places to visit and back in Wales it will be the beautiful sandy coves of Ceredigionshire for the odd few days. Not bad.

Thanks for the tip I remember a family holiday in Sardinia it got up to 40 degrees plus. You could probably bake a potato in the sand!

And take your own water/soft drinks with you if you visit Pompeii. I paid about £5 for a glass of orange juice just outside.
If you want to see a bit of how the locals live you can get a train from Sorrento which takes you right into Pompeii. (Sorrento is worth a visit even if it's a bit touristy.)

Same as last year - two weeks in Platanias Crete.
My 3 kids loved the place.

I feel I need to compensate the rest of the family for my planned self indulgences.
Formula 1 in Barcelona in May, one week in the UK to see RUSH (Brum, Sheffield & Glasgow) two weeks later, then off to Berlin the week after for another RUSH gig and finally Sweden Rock the same weekend.
May/June will be busy.  ;D

I think they are at their worst from the end of May until September.  I'm told that Avon Skin So Soft is the best midge repellent.
Title: Re: Summer hols - where are you going?
Post by: NeilP on March 13, 2013, 08:55:45 am
Yep, that can be effective though you'd have to put it on every bit of exposed skin and it isn't great when it's raining. Also limited protection against other biting beasties http://www.which.co.uk/home-and-garden/archive/reviews-ns/insect-repellents/insect-repellents-compared/

If you don't wish to use DEET then the most effective I've found is either Smidge http://www.tiso.com/shop/smidge/ or the locally produced Bite free http://www.bitefree.co.uk/shop-online-insect-repellent/

I remember running for my life one still evening near Loch Lomond when a cloud of them appeared suddenly
