I'd considered the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 when I was looking for an interface recently, but ended up with an Alesis Core 1.  Not that pleased with it really, getting slightly muddy results when recording. It may be that I need to fiddle with levels a bit.  Also bought a Boss GT-001. Most of the patches it comes with are Very Metal but it sounds fantastic with a bit of work.

Trying out some Dunlop Primetone 1.4mm Jazz III picks, the main idea being the improved grip from the raised motif and increased thickness should give more response through my afflicted thumb and forefinger (they have a lack of sensation as a result of my mild stroke a couple of years ago).

They're a bit pricey but seem to be fulfilling their brief so I'll probably stick with them.

Increasingly I've just been playing with my thumb this last couple of years. My favourite picks are the old grey 0.75mm Hercos. The silver ones are similar and I have a load of them. Still have four or five of the grey ones left. I never wear them out, but I do lose them.

Bought myself an SG. Always fancied one, since I played a friend's Japanese copy some time in 1976. Takes me a while to get round to these things sometimes.

A thing of beauty, James, and I'm sure it plays as good as it looks.  Love that finish and the chrome on the pickups.  PRS guitars with naked pickups just don't seem "complete" to me.

Happened to notice Kenny’s Music in Glasgow offering a huge discount on a Yamaha APX1000; ordered it Xmas Eve and it arrived today.  I remember trying one out some time ago and loved it, but it cost about a grand at the time and I couldn’t justify that sort of price.  But I’ve now got one for half that and it’s an absolute dream to play with its thinline body and 23 frets, sounds lush and looks great too with its crimson burst, gold hardware and trapezoid fret markers.

May have to offload the PRS SE Angelus mind as the man cave can only take so much gear.  EDIT: Sold it.

Had very few opportunities to have a play so far, James, but I already know it’s a better fit for me than the Angelus.  It’s more versatile and just plays easier.  Haven’t tried it in a gig setting yet, but from what I’ve read it’s a stronger all-round performer than the PRS in that environment. 


I’ll be much more active gig-wise soon so I’ll be getting my hands on it a lot more in the coming weeks.  But early impressions are very good.
