Toni Erdmann

Cracking movie. German comedy. Oscar-nominated, and Sight & Sound's film of 2016. A real movie lover's treat - takes it's time to develop characters (over two and a half hours long), and has several "laugh out loud" scenes. Its also incredibly poignant and touching. I've also never seen anything quite like it: a unique plot. Has one of those endings that leaves you thinking about it for days afterwards.

Scarily I did exactly the same thing.
So glad I waited til now to watch it. Not sure I could've waited a year for season 6 after that season 5 finale.  ;)

David Brent - Life on The Road
Shit, gave up after 20 mins.  What was he thinking?

Oasis - Supersonic
Enjoyable look back at the first few years upto 1996 - made me very nostalgic.  Loved them back then...right band, right time.

Yeah - I watched that on Amazon Prime last week as it was part of the free films bit - not that good I have to say - way below what I expected.....

Yes, it's quite poor and a very lazy effort by his standards.

Neville & Carragher programme about top level referees....

Well worth tracking down if you have an interest in football and if, like me, complain about the standards of refereeing...

There is a new film adaptation of Stephen King's Horror novel; 'It' to be released in the UK in September. In anticipation of this, and having never previously seen it, I watched the film edit version of the 1990, dramatisation originally broadcast over 2 consective nights on prime time US television, 'It' achieved an audience of over 30m viewers, received a surprising amount of praise from viewers and garnered generally positive reviews from critics.....apart from a terrific creepy performance by Tim Curry as 'Pennywise the Clown' it is a steaming pile of shite! The acting is risible, and script is terrible. Avoid!

Been watching Breaking Bad again. Done the lot in 3 weeks. Reaffirmed its place in my top 5 US tv series of all time.

Browsing on Youtube I stumbled upon a formal debate from 2008 between Christopher Hitchens and his brother Peter.

Great entertainment; they had a frosty relationship at the time and it shows, although it never threatens to get "nasty".  I approached it with as much of an open mind as possible but when they debate "God", Christopher - who is in peak form in this - really does dismantle his opponent pretty comprehensively and with no small amount of wit; Peter actually makes it easier by leading with his chin most of the time.

Worth seeking out if there's a couple of hours to spare.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Because the Indie Half is a Harry Potter fan.

As someone who just doesn't get the fuss about HP, I quite enjoyed it; watched it in 3D and happily it's one of those films that utilises it very well.  Plus there's lots of great sound effects that get the subwoofer throbbing.

I had it in my head it won some technical Oscar but on checking it turns out it walked away with Best Costume Design.

Just caught up with the BBC series "Hospital" from earlier in the year....shows the daily battle for beds in the NHS in intricate detail. Should be compulsory viewing for politicians and NHS customers alike...
