I must confess I normally buy cheap coffee makers - the current one is a Haden, wasn't more than £20 I don't think - but it makes a cracking cup of coffee. I warm the milk in a large mug in a microwave then stick it straight under the spout; I don't bother with the jug.

They usually last about three years although this one's lasted about five, now. Probably because I don't spend as much time in the house these days.

Seven now, blimey.

Right.  One word verdict on my 'Baby':

WOW.

I got it out of the box and assembled it tonight.  Went through the initial set-up of pumping one tankful of water through the steam arm and one tankful through the, er, coffee pump bit, whatever its called.

Then I made my first single espresso - very easy to do, and a fantastic result on the first go, crema and all.

Right, thought I, let's try the steam wand - so I put some milk in my jug, and followed the instructions and hey presto, I had hot, foamed milk about a minute later.  Poured this over the espresso, and, voila, one tasty latte.  Oh yes - I didn't expect great results as I used UHT milk, but it worked fine.

So top marks for my first bash.  I deliberately didn't use any sugar or syrups this time - just coffee, water and milk.

Excellent.  Very happy punter here.

Made a cappuccino tonight.  Double espresso, + steamed milk + dense froth on top.

Dusted with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Yumbly bumbly.

Bit of a disaster this morning.  Made a caramel latte to go with a double espresso - but frothed the milk too quickly, ending up with a luke warm latte.  Nice tasting, but not hot enough - should have popped it in the microwave!

I've definitely got the hang of steaming now.  As well as lattes, cappuccinos and mochas, I also use it for straight hot chocolate - even using skimmed milk, it comes out rich and smooth.  Much better than microwaving!

Very pleased indeed with my Baby.

Couple of things I still need to get  - a proper 57mm tamper as the plastic one you get with the machine is plastic and has no weight, and eventually a grinder so I can grind my own beans rather than being stuck with limited ready ground espresso options.  Having said that, I picked up some Whittard Espresso last weekend, and that's nice.  More expensive than my usual Lavazza though.  And I bought some really cheap espresso from Ikea last weekend which I don't hold out much hope for - 'twas only about £1.30 still I'll give it a chance.

Good job I wasn't expecting a lot.  I won't be buying it again!

I've treated myself to the grinder that Pricey has - John Lewis had it knocked down to £35.95 from £39.99.

Also bagged a selection of beans from various places.  I even bought some Illy beans, which Waitrose had on offer at 20% off.  Along with some Monsooned Malabar, and some Pico Daurte (iiirc).  Oh yes, and the bean version of LaVazza Espresso - one of my favourite ground coffees, so it should be even better freshly ground.

On the lookout for a nice tamper now (will probably get a stand too) - currently using the bottom of a chocolate shaker, as it is a perfect fit for the Gaggia baskets.  The plastic one supplied with the Gaggia is a) too small and b) plastic!  I understand why they supply a plastic one - to keep costs down.  But why not make it the right size?

Ground my first beans using the new grinder last night and brewed up some Fair Trade Peaberry.

Yum.

i got a metal tamper from whittards, much more effective than the plastic one which got skimmed, another good thing Reg is Gaggia do a cleaning mix, which you dissolve in the water tank and pump through the machine every 6 months or so, depending on use, i cleaned mine first time last week and its made a big difference i think...if you pass Cheshire Oaks try the Whittards ashop there, thats were mine came from.

I did pop in there last time I was up, but the Whittards has shrunk considerably there.  They no longer sell machines, or tampers.  I know, cos I was looking for a tamper.

A tamper will be my next purchase, along with a tamper stand I think, if you know what I mean.  Just had a look on Amazon, and I may just get this kit:

On the way to Sutton-in-Ashfield on Friday, I spotted one of those outlet village things, so I popped in, and they've got a Whittards there.  Lo and behold, they had one and one only of their metal tampers left, no box, for £2.50, so I grabbed it.  Sorted.  I'd like to get a really nice one some day, but this will do nicely for now.

Discovered that I don't need to tamp my freshly ground coffee anywhere near as firmly as I do pre-ground coffee.  Am quite impressed with the grinder, definitely grinds fine enough for espresso.

I forgot to mention, I got a 'proper' tamper a while back.  A Motta, and it is gr-r-r-reat.  Wooden handle, quite weighty (stainless steel business end) and fits my basket well.

I tried a new combination last weekend - I had a latte with toffee nut syrup, and sprinkled some nutmeg on top.   Very nice.

Bought one of those tassimo machines (the T20) that read the pods with the barcodes. Very happy with the quality! The pods run a little expensive but I managed to snag a couple of the variety packs which are hard to come by (46 pods for $26). Usually a box of 16 pods run about $10.

At work we just got a $300 Keurig machine, just had a cup and it's also very good.
