New Coffee machine!
« on: February 03, 2008, 21:32:47 PM »
I think my coffee machine isn't heating the coffee to the correct temperature so was wondering whether anyone could recommend a good one?

My only thing it must have is a metal jug as I break glass ones because I'm so heavy handed. I do like the Gaggia ones and saw a Krupps one but wondered whether they were more fashionable ones or are actually very good?

Any ideas?

I just got a Bialetti 9 cup - and at a great price.  Fantastic bit of gear.

John Lewis (in store) wanted £34.00
Cheapest on t'internet I could find was £24.99.
Walked into Whittard (tea + coffee suppliers), and there it was on the shelf for £18.90.

And yes, this is a genuine Bialetti, not some own-branded dodgy copy.

Bargain.

I must confess I normally buy cheap coffee makers - the current one is a Haden, wasn't more than £20 I don't think - but it makes a cracking cup of coffee. I warm the milk in a large mug in a microwave then stick it straight under the spout; I don't bother with the jug.

They usually last about three years although this one's lasted about five, now. Probably because I don't spend as much time in the house these days.

I've got a 3 cup Bialetti as well now - for when I just want to make something for myself.

They are so easy to use and clean.  And there is something very satisfying about the aroma and noise they make as they gurgle away.

Admittedly, there is no crema produced, but apart from that, 'tis ace.

They do - 'tis called the Brikka.

But it is limited in that it only comes in 2 cup and 4 cup varieties priced at around £40 and £45 pounds.  I might get me one someday.

ah - sorry i got confused over the models, must admit the gaggia i have makes a lovely big mug of coffee, but the bialetti mokka express goes from nowt to cappuccino in 4 mins, really handy if im doing  a solo brew.

Why is that then Reg? For me it's the best part so a machine that produces crema would be a must.

The Moka Express valve doesn't produce enough pressure to generate the crema, but as most of the espresso I make goes into latte / capuccino / americano it doesn't matter that much.

The Brikka has a special valve which generates more pressure and produces a crema - but only available in 2 and 4 cup varieties.  I will almost certainly get one someday.

The thing about the Bialettis (Moka Express anyway) are their ease of use.  Put water in the bottom.  Coffee in the middle.  Screw top on.  Put over low/medium heat on the cooker.  A few minutes later espresso is ready.  When cool, dismantle, empty coffee grounds and rinse in warm/hot water - don't use any washing up liquid or scrubbers or anything - just water and perhaps a dishcloth - nothing abrasive.
